68% of US prisoners are minorities, I don't think there's a problem locking up people because they are part of some minority. honestly, I don't know what to think of this song. If it is satirical, I missed it. If it's not, I can't really get behind a song that things "tolerance" and "kindness" are things to look down upon. |

I really love the lightning seeds if you listen to the lyrics, you can see there is some hidden meaning behind them, even if you just thought they sounded cool. whoever wrote these songs is a genius. if you listen to any modern-day song, often you will find they are just a group of words jumbled together so that they rhyme, and some dont rhyme at all, but with the lightning seeds its different. its so poetic, and yet so enjoyable to listen to. Maybe its just me, because i grew up listening to this band. Meh |

The quickening is "the earliest perception of fetal movement by a mother during pregnancy." In former times, before quickening it was permissible to abort the pregnancy. So I assume the song is at least partly about the "when does life begin?" debate and how it's somewhat pointless assigning an exact moment. |

I think the religious and spiritual elements of this song are clear. It's almost saying I love you so much I want to treat you like my messiah. I want to worship you. I'll go through it line by line. It's tedious, but it's the only way: I never thought of this as funny (referring to love or religion) It speaks another world to me (Spiritual world) I want to be your Easter bunny I want to be your Christmas tree (Both Christian holidays, both objects associated with hidden gifts) I'll strip the world that you must live in Of all its godforsaken greed (Desire to make the world pure for her/him) I'll ply the tar out of your feathers (Tarring and feathering, an old punishment; my translation: you've been beaten up by the world and I want to sooth and cure you) I'll pluck the thorns out of your feet (Another reference to removing the person being sung to from pain) And if I choose your sanctuary (another religious word, if I choose your safe place I'll be there to do the following) I want to wash you with my hair (as pointed out before, religous metaphor, seen as a very humbling gesture from Mary Magdalen to Christ in the Bible, who many speculate was his secret wife) I want to drink of sacred fountains (Sacred: yet more religion) And find the riches hidden there (These two lines seem to me like a metaphor for oral sex, but on a higher level it could also be drinking in the essence of someone more metaphorically, knowing someone's secret self) I'll eat the lotus and peyote (substances consumed to experience spiritual enlightment; also adds strength to the oral sex metaphor above both because they are eaten and because the lotus has long been associate with the vagina) I want to hear the caged bird sing (An interesting reference to a Maya Angelou Peom, the refrain of which goes like this: The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom. To me, this could mean he wants to hear his lover scream with longing or perhaps hear what she longs for and cannot obtain) I want the secrets of the temple (More religion; the secret part of the Jewish temple was known as the Holy of Holies and only God and the High Priest were allowed to go there; Personally, I think this is another reference to sex) I want the finger with the ring (Sounds like marriage to me, could also be a reference followers of the pope kneeling and kissing his ring as a sign of great respect) That if you make me your religion (Worship me and:) I'll give you all the room you need (Not sure about this one) I'll be the drawing of your breath (I'll be your very air) I'll be the cup if you should bleed (Someone else thought this referenced communion, but I think it's a reference to the holdy grail, which legend has it was both used at the Last Supper and then used to catch the blood of Christ as the lay dying on the cross by Joseph of Arimathea. I think this strongly makes the point that he wants to worship his lover. He's saying if you worship me (make me your religion) I'll worship you too) I'll be the sky above the Ganges (Not really sure about this reference, though I know the Ganges is sacred in Hinduism and that it is believed that washing in it will cleanse you) I'll be the vast and stormy sea (Not quite sure about this one, but the vast see could easily be a reference to the eternality of God, could also be a reference to the time Jesus walked on water; alternatively, taken in context with the next line, it could be more of an I am your everything sort of statement) I'll be the lights that guide you inward (Both a lighthouse metaphor when taken in context with the last line, but also spiritual in that inner light is often a metaphor for spirituality) I'll be the visions you will see (Vision obviously have spiritual connotations, only instead of seeing the mother Mary, you'll be seeing Michael Stipe) The visions you will see Anyway, I hope that analysis made sense, I really do think it is a beautiful song. I'd be interested to hear other's thoughts |

| Seems to me that this ties into the final dialog like this: molly has taken the final step, taking her old mortal body (rusted chair) and moving up into higher forms of thought and sensation (the satellite), and this song is about ray watching her change and wishing that he could see/do/be what she can/is.
