People sometimes say that you should try and date a lot of different people, so you can "figure out what you want" before you get married or have a long-term relationship. I don't think this advice is always a good idea, and this song sort of explains why. It sounds like the narrator was in a generally good relationship, but she felt an urge to explore. Now she regrets her choice, but her former boyfriend/husband has moved on. He is involved with/married to someone else and has a whole different life now. Hence the "You're living in another world".
One day I overheard a co-worker talking to another co-worker. She mentioned that she had been with her husband for ten years, and now she realizes that her previous boyfriend was the man who made her the happiest. He was now married to someone else. It sounded like she was staying with her husband as a second choice. (Which I think is unfair to the husband.) |

As a woman, I've observed two other woman who always seemed ready to leave their current boyfriends/husbands if a "better deal" arose. A man with more money, a more expensive car, larger house in a higher-income neighborhood, etc. It seemed like each new situation did not last. The next boyfriend/husband would lose his job, his business would fail, houses would be foreclosed on, etc. Children were unhappy because of the parents' choices and made bad choices of their own. I can understand wanting *some* sense of security, but the true love and mutual respect needs to be there. |

I used to like this song in high school. Now that I am older (late 30s), I disagree with the line "It's only in your head you feel left out and looked-down-on". There *are* people who will leave you out or look down you. What really matters is how you choose to deal with it. Decide who is actually important in your life. |

A lot of people think this is just a fun vacation song or party song, but it sounds more complicated to me: "Now that I'm away, I wish I'd stayed / Tomorrow's a day of mine that you won't be in."

I think she met someone while on vacation - maybe even cheated on her husband or boyfriend - and now she is questioning her regular life at home. |

I agree that you should try and make the best of your current life, but I completely disagree with saying "You're gonna miss this". I am in my late thirties and I feel more comfortable with myself than I did in high school. After being with my husband for fifteen years, we have a bunch of history, inside jokes, and we understand each other well. Some of life is what you make it. |

It sounds to me like the woman is in a committed relationship or is married. Her partner/husband is tempted by someone else, and she wants him to appreciate their life and their history together. |

I think the narrator / character of the song, and Johnny, deserve each other. He ditched her for Judy, so she uses another guy to make him jealous, and she is impressed when Johnny attacks him? I don't think Judy is totally innocent, but she and the other guy are better off not dealing with these two. |
