| Hozier – In the Woods Somewhere Lyrics | 4 years ago |
| @[maximus104:38750] this is actually very clear. Fox screams sound just like a woman screaming, if you've never heard one. So he thinks he hears a woman, but actually finds instead an injured fox (that's the "he") | |
| Pink Martini – Dosvedanya Mio Bombino Lyrics | 7 years ago |
|
Dosvedanya is Russian for good-bye, and Mio Bambino is Italian for my (male) child, but also can mean baby, as in slang for a bf/gf. I think the other comment explaining the meaning makes sense, but I'll expound a little. First of all, the samovar is like a form of Russian tea kettle. It's a tradition to sit and chat while having tea. Being Russian, the subject of the song would know this, but instead his car 'waits in the freezing rain' - he's not planning on staying long. She asks 'will you ever know what you are?' the man is torn between two halves, and his ancestry of Russia (often seen as cold and unyielding) and Italy (often seen as warm and happy) show the dichotomy of his character. Abive the Adriatic sea/ in Florence (Italy) they were briefly happy, but the mazurka (happy eastern European dance) had to end, because the man couldn't settle down. When he finally settles down, he chooses the domestic life, but when she viaits and mentions the snow falling in Red Square (Russia) he despairs, thinking about the parts of his life he has given up. The ending, valderi, valdera, show that the women has chosen the path of freedom, choosing not to settle down. 'Valderi valdera' is a nonsense phrase from the song The Happy Wanderer, and the imagery of her setting off into the unknown is compounded by the line 'my knapsack [traditional choice of travelers] on my back' So the message of the song is basically 'good-bye baby' across two languages, giving up on the man who is torn and undecisive, and setting out to continue on your journey [in love]. |

I am pretty sure the line: You better guide your tongue like your enemy should be: You better guard your tongue like your enemy |

| Tom Odell – I Know Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
There are some mistakes in these lyrics: On the way I stand On the way I sway The way your hair coats in the rain The little lines that write on your face On the winter nights, you come and stay Oh the way you hit me when you wanna fight The way I yawn, the way I cry The way I love rose with the ties But we know it won't make up every time Should be: On the way you stand, on the way you sway The way your hair curls in the rain The little lines write your face So do winter nights you'd come and stay Or the way you hit me when you wanna fight The way i yearn, the way i cry The way i love rose with the tides But we know we'll make up every time |

| The Lumineers – Gale Song Lyrics | 11 years ago |

I'm pretty sure the last line is "And this blood, this blood, this blood Oh it drains from my skin, it does" not "and dust" |
|
| Ray LaMontagne – All the Wild Horses Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| yes, it should be. also the line "may no man's weight every defray(ed) your soul" doesn't make sense because the tense doesn't match up, it's incorrect. I think it should just be "defray" | |
| Jeremy Messersmith – Day Job Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I love all of JM's songs, but this one is definitely in my top 5. There is a sense of wistfulness about it even though there is a lot of doubt. The narrator is talking about a girl who is living a carefree lifestyle and eventually moves away, leaving him behind. He had the choice to go with her, but instead of taking a risk, he decided to play it safe and stay behind. Once she's there, he wonders what it would have been like had he gone with her. | |

| Ludo – Anything for You Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| It's "shrively" not " shriely :) | |
| Ludo – Manta Rays Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| That's my favorite line. I adore it. | |
| They Might Be Giants – Birdhouse in Your Soul Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| No. The lyrics say it stands on the shore and keeps the beaches shipwreck-free - that's a clear reference to a lighthouse, often lit with a flame and mirrors (precursors to the light in the outlet). A dove doesn't stand on the shore and keep the ships away from the rocks. | |
| Of Monsters And Men – Sloom Lyrics | 13 years ago |

| I can't believe this doesn't have many comments.. this song is amazing. | |
| The Felice Brothers – Murder By Mistletoe Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| <3 this band, they are from the same place I grew up. I believe they have a reference to the song "My Blue Eyed Jane" by Jimmie Rodgers. | |

| The Airborne Toxic Event – Missy Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| yeah i agree with you. It is "Psalms". | |
| Patty Griffin – Peter Pan Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I'm surprised there aren't more comments on this song. This has been a favorite of mine for quite some time. She knows she has to leave and it's a heartbreaking feeling, but it has to be done. Almost as if for his own protection ("where you'll be safe from me now forever") |

| City and Colour – Northern Wind Lyrics | 14 years ago |

There is another line after " I am slowly sinking " it is: "into the the slough of despond" Which is a reference to the book A Pilgrim's Progress |
|
| A. A. Bondy – Rapture (Sweet Rapture) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I adore this song | |
| SafetySuit – What If Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I disagree that this is about cheating. Why would he say "What if?" Of COURSE if he cheats she'll be sad, there is no "what if" about it. I agree with some of the earlier posts that he has to make a choice like a move or job, etc. The song is about how much he loves her while knowing something else he wants will probably hurt her, but not irreparably. He'll try and make it better. That doesn't jive with cheating. |

| Apathy doesn't mean pity. It means indifference. Apathy means he doesn't care enough about anything. | |
| Good with Grenades – bruises and bitemarks Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Hot. | |
| Train – This Ain't Goodbye Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
It's "not the way you've always been" not "by the way" I think this is my favorite song off of Save Me San Francisco. To me, it's a song about soul mates. Not just romantically - but two people who are just always meant to be together and friends, whether platonically or not. They just know each other perfectly. Their love for each other is eternal, but not romantically. The pair tried a romance, but it didn't work out, and the singer is telling the other that it's not the end. They will always have each other no matter what. "you can't be mine, not the way you've always been" - it will never be the same relationship, but the relationship is still there. just my .02 |

| Train – Breakfast in Bed Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| It's "better WEAR some lotion" | |
| Train – Brick By Brick Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I like this a lot. He's talking about a house of memories, representing their relationship. Kind of like a "castle in the sky", except not the future. And building up the house is only possible together. | |
| Train – Half Moon Bay Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| What a great song. Just a tribute to the person he is in love with. | |
| Third Eye Blind – Don't Believe a Word Lyrics | 15 years ago |

| Ryan Adams – Blossom Lyrics | 15 years ago |

| A Fine Frenzy – Bird of the Summer Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| apply* not reply. Where is my brain | |
| A Fine Frenzy – Bird of the Summer Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think the obvious metaphor is the summer fling, but I think this can also reply to a relationship that was "real", could have lasted a while but was doomed from the start. She had a relationship with this person who she loved, it obviously didn't last, so she found someone who "won't fly away". This new person is loyal to her, but doesn't elicit the same feelings as the the first person did. The last part is a bit ambiguous to me, it sounds like maybe she is waiting to see if he will come back to her, and she might leave the current man to go back to him. |
|
| Lucky Jim – You're Lovely To Me Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I find every word of this song absolutely beautiful... "The gates they are strong but they open for song I have heard" ^ my favorite part..that's something i would want as an epitaph |

| Third Eye Blind – Water Landing Lyrics | 15 years ago |

| Third Eye Blind – Losing a Whole Year Lyrics | 15 years ago |

| Why do people not check the lyrics are correct before they put them up? They really need an editor.... | |
| Third Eye Blind – Sharp Knife Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
As with all of their songs...this song just speaks to me. I love it so much. I don't even want to analyze it because it's so perfect. "And I think there's a reason At least there's a sign And all that we call chaos I will say it's by design But I'm just lying" and "If we could just say, "let it be." But that's not me." LOVE. |
|
| Third Eye Blind – Bonfire Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I am a huge fan of 3eb since they appeared...I just love everything they touch. The way he sings "
And I am high like a star that's flying
, Cassiopeia
" is just haunting and beautiful. Ursa Major has a different sound but it's just as great as their earlier stuff imo, just different. Bravo 3eb! | |
| Third Eye Blind – Danger Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| that's what I thought of immediately! | |
| Good Old War – I'm Not For You Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Mine is the same, this one is probably an earlier version of the song | |
| Good Old War – Coney Island Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I'm pretty sure it's "I'm going to Coney Island TO have myself a dog". He says to more like "ta" and it's pretty fast but it sounds like that to me...he's obviously talking about Nathan's Famous hot dogs which Coney Island is known for | |
| Colin Hay – Waiting For My Real Life To Begin Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I love this song more than anything. I listen to it constantly. It is amazing and just really speaks to me, I'm stuck between jobs, I had a plan for where my life would be at this age but nothing happened like I planned it. Instead of taking action and changing my life, I'm patiently "waiting" - unhealthy, but true. | |
| Freelance Whales – The Great Estates Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Surprised no one has commented on this song yet. I think this is my favorite track on the Weathervanes album. While all the FW lyrics seem really ambiguous to me, I love this song and I get a sense of the cyclic nature of things from it. Rebirth is menioned, souls are mentioned as guides, and being pulled out of the ground. It's very mellow and relaxing. |

| Rhett Miller – Question Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| such a simple yet beautiful song. | |
| Cake – Jolene Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
oranges, i like that interpretation, as if this was a song to show Jolene's side of things. I don't really expect that's exactly what its about but its interesting and could be partially connected. They had to know of that song before naming this one, as it is famous. I love this song - it's my favorite song by Cake. However, unlike many comments I don't believe the song speaks of abuse. I can see where that interpretation might come from, but to me it just seems like she is bored with her life, she still lives at home but is old enough to leave, and she wants to make something of her life while the man singing wants to show her what's really out there. just my opinion. |
|
| Blitzen Trapper – Furr Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I have to agree with Nikliv. I really feel that the story of a werewolf is being used as both an analogy for a child becoming a man, and a person really "finding themselves". The fur is a metaphor. | |
