hmm... I used to not like this song for some reason. barelylegal, when I read your comment, i thought it was kind of way out there, but I went back and read the lyrics and it actually does make sense. Imagine, you're wrong; eternalstroke is a genius. I actually felt a wave of emotion reading that post... =O I agree with br4nd0n and eternalstroke; The image, I think, is of when the disciples recieved the holy spirit and were empowered to "speak in tongues", and tongues of fire floated over their heads as kind of a manifestation of the spirit. What does fire do? Heat, yes, but it also provides light, which means it casts shadows and creats silhouettes. Actually, on thinking on it further, the setting with the disciples most likely isn't necessary, just the tongues of fire... actually, I'm sure of it: "Your eyes, resting in flame" - in other words, well, see below, to the eyes part... sorry, I revise parts as I think more, and it's not always in a terribly coherent, easy-tp-follow fashion. The imagery of the silhouette, I think, is this: since the holy spirit purifies and makes holy, like eternalstroke said, the tongues of fire casting light on a person could represent purifying them. But if something was in the way of the person and the light, that something would appear as a silhouette, hiding the fire and keeping the truth from the person, hence the "silhouette lies." My guess is that the eyes dustin keeps talking about are God's "eyes", holy-fying him; "your eyes, speaking in tongues." They sift his soul, in other words, purify him, like diamonds from coal. That shouldn't be too hard to understand. And, of course, they "kill" his false ideas about life when the light from the tongues of fire falls on him and reveals the truth. (work with me on the imagery, here) So that's my take on the song as a whole... a couple parts I don't understand, though: "They lace me along, Giving synapse of white lines. Then chasing the dawn, Story book syntax." I simply don't get this part. And: "Like hydrogen spread on fault lines. Or dead, kissing me with exposure to radon." so... what does hydrogen spread on fault lines, or a dead person (I think that's the implication) being exposed to radon? |

I think it's "Pound a pattern out on the pavement"... I'm loving the illiteration: "pound... pattern... pavement" "sound... siren... streets" "black box" "Prescription... sPeed" "found... freeway... forever" "drown... demon... deep" "rhythm... rifle... repeating" "But I gotta keep movin' if I wanna keep breathing" this brings to my mind an image of a line of people (prisoners) who have to keep moving because they're threatened by rifles. I can't decide if this song's about a violent (war or riot or whatever) situation, or is using it as a metahor. |

| Thrice – Cold Cash And Colder Hearts Lyrics | 20 years ago |
OnetwoOneTwo, I really doubt "different god" means anything beyond literally that, belonging to a different religion than you. And I think "living in sin" probably refers to gays, or cohabitating, or just living a sinful lifestyle overall. "they are wolves at the door" Three little piggies, anyone? "And they're not going move us" just like the wolf didn't move the first two piggies. They're going to cause trouble for us a few times, and then we'll have to learn from our mistakes. |

| Relient K – My Girl's Ex-Boyfriend Lyrics | 21 years ago |
in the CD booklet, it says debris. I wonder if the song isn't really from another person's point of view, where Matt is the "someone I would hate to be." He describes the feelings that the unlucky guy would feel pretty in-depth. Not to mention that the one most prevalent theme on the CD is regretting mistakes, and this would fit in nicely. |

| Relient K – Be My Escape Lyrics | 21 years ago |
"I fought You for so long I should have let You in Oh how we regret those things we do And all I was trying to do was save my own skin But so were You" those last two lines confused me for a while. I presumed that the "you" in this case is God, but why would God be trying to save his own skin? Then I thought, he's trying to save Matt's skin, presumably because the methods Matt were using weren't working. He thought God (or whoever) was working against him, but in reality he was working against himself. |

I just want to point out the myriad of references to the heart and the blood it pumps. "Men without chests" would entail that they don't have a heart, which is their "only compass" ("reason) to guide and restrain the "appetite." In Alexander Pope's Essay on Man, he describes two forces within a person: reason and self-love (aka emotion or "our iron will".) Self-love is the stronger of the two, since it deals with what is close at hand, the desires of the moment, but reason is the better and more important one because it looks to the future and looks at the consequences. It's the force that holds reason in check (usually.) |

| Thrice – So Strange I Remember You Lyrics | 21 years ago |
liek omg dubble post. I was thinking about it today and I realized that there is a ton of alliteration. "So strange", "protest.. prayer", "seas.. sail.. swear.. shooter", "deep.. double dare", "kneeling.. Neitzsche", "cathedrals.. crumbling", "hearts.. hands", "disposable.. document decay", "capture.. catalogue", "things.. throw". There's also a ton of references to death. "Shooter", "postmortem", "grave", "dead cathedrals", "words of the dead". I think now that the sea and ships may be a metaphor for death, as a "crossing over" of some sort. Today in my religion class we started watching a movie called What Dreams May Come, since the teacher was on retreat and we just took a test which featured a large portion on suffering and dealing with it. Like I said before, the first line deals with wanting (or needing) to forget about somebody, and in this context, it would be grieving for a person's death, but then going on with your life. "Seas we fear to sail" - we are afraid of what we do not know - death. The "shooter" may be an assassin of some sort, intentional or not. I really don't know what "gold deep" means, but I think "double dare" could have something to do with the kind of stupid, reckless and dangerous things teenagers tend to do. "My throat was an open grave I drank your stained glass eyes" - he (or whoever it is) refuses to let go of their loved one, to the extreme of (wanting to) go with them into their grave. The person indulged theirself in the memory of their loved one, but it only "tasted" like something unpleasant, like "dead cathedrals." "Tourists" - every human will die eventually, right? That makes us all tourists on Earth; we're just visiting for a few years, the blink of an eye compared to the age of the planet. We, as humanity, have grown decadent and "decay"ing, at least when it comes to morals, i.e. our "hearts and hands." We've traded what is right and good for that which gives us the pleasure or avoidance of pain for the instant - a snapshot, if you will, of our lives. We "throw away" so many things that could have done us and other so much good; as we do this more and more, we decay, and we have the process figuratively "documented" by the snapshots from our temporary ("disposable") cameras. That's the description for how the "stained glass eyes" taste. Whew. Talk about an extended metaphor. Extended explanation, at least... "Our machines" and "television dreams" refers to the decaying process, or how we "lost our way", how we pollute the environment with their "fumes", and how we decay on the inside by vegetating in front of the TV, getting fat and dumb and soaking any and all the trash that might happen to float across the screen. "If we could only see us now" - this part to the rest of the song is what reminds me most of What Dreams May Come, where (near the beginning, at least) Robin Williams's character is killed, but still wanders around for a time as a ghost of sorts; this line is like how he could see everyone else, like at his funeral and elsewhere, grieving for him, though they can't see him. I think it conveys a sense that grieving for a dead person or something else for too long, (not letting getting on with your life) is silly and foolish. Grieving is like a medicine; actually, it's more like setting a broken bone back in place. The initial wound hurts a whole lot, but you've gotta fix it, or it never heals the same. You've got to set it, which may hurt more acutely and in a shorter period of time than leaving it alone, but in the long run, it's much better off that way. "the words of the dead ring in our ears but its only a lie the voice in your head brings you to tears but you don’t know why" there's a scene in the movie where Robin Williams, as a ghost, is kind of talking to his wife, who is writing in her diary, and somehow influences her to write something to the effect of "this is (name), I still exist", but then she yells/cries and crumples up the paper and throws it away. omg liek long post. |

| Thrice – So Strange I Remember You Lyrics | 21 years ago |
The first part of the song, up through "My throat was an open grave, I drank your stained glass eyes", strikes me as Dustin remembering something or more likely someone, such as a woman in his life who led him astray, (with "Nietzsche’s lies") and he wants (has prayed) to forget her, but "in protest" of that prayer he can't. Also, note the several references to seas and ships... I don't know what it's a metaphor for, but there it is. |

| Thrice – The Melting Point of Wax Lyrics | 21 years ago |
"But how will I know limits from life if i never try?" This line seems kind of out of character with Thrice's awesomely good philosophizing and whatnot. In the context of Icarus, this is just stupid. You'll know your limits, unfortunately it won't do you any good, because you'll be dead. I can see the better to try and fail than never try at all thing, but Dustin could at least have chosen a better analogy. |

| Thrice – To What End Lyrics | 21 years ago |
the song is essentially asking why we're here, what is our purpose to be alive. Why do we have poetry, and art and the like? IMO he is questioning the atheist point of view that life is an accident, that everything in the universe is meaningless. This is a little thing my dad wrote which has a good amount of relevance: http://crowhill.net/blog/index.php?p=2268 |

| Thrice – Stare At The Sun Lyrics | 21 years ago |

"why is truth so hard to find in this world" that's pretty much the gist of the song. Whether it's concrete religious proof, or just a purpose for life, he wants some kind of truth to rely on. |

| Thrice – A Living Dance Upon Dead Minds Lyrics | 21 years ago |
seems to me the first part describes love as a volatile thing, which can cause explosions at any minute. Maybe it's just a coincedence, (I doubt it) but notice how "mines" sounds so much similar to "minds." An example comes to mind of a pack of bullies "dancing" (beating up on) a "dead mind" (a mentally retarded kid). Someone sees this, and out of love for their fellow man, "explodes" and puts the bullies to justice. "disdains the trivial labeling of punctual brains" I'm not sure, but it could have something to do with scientists trying to classify a really smart person (punctual brain; they can solve problems or the like really fast or something) or someone with an extraordinary or miraculous ability into something that just doesn't fit them; they're way too complex to be described like that. Notice that it talks about dancing on "dead" minds and later about death and the grave. Dancing on graves? I dunno. One thing I think, though, is that the "poem huger than the grave" is love. Who wields love? Could it have something to do with God (from the Christia perspective, like Dustin [although he didn't write it]) is described as the essence of love, or is it that every human being loves something or someone? It just occured to me that that's just the song... I might try to analyze the actual poem later. |

the lyrics are most certainly not dead on. "Hey taxi, send me straight to the [heart of it] The nucleus of politics [where] somebody Somebody started it Cause they taxe me with a scapel piece by piece they cut me deep and [bled] me dry until there was nothing left to bleed " "[As] if I'm jumping off a cliff" "there's nothing left [there to] forgive" "leave this [defeat] miles behind me so far back I'd have to [rack] my mind [to] just remind me [I keep trying] to pick myself [back] up and then move on " "Every breath that I inhale is followed by exhaling [sure as] the one who never [fails] I know you'll never [fail] me" I love the wordplay in their lyrics, like "taxi" and "tax me". And "rack my mind to just remind me" |

| Relient K – Who I Am Hates Who I've Been Lyrics | 21 years ago |
those lyrics are freaking riddled with errors. "I'm ready to [make sure I never become] that way again " "I talk[ed] to absolutely no one Couldn't keep to myself [enough] and [the] things bottled inside have finally begun to create so much pressure that I['ll soon blow up and] I heard the [reverberating] footsteps [synching] up to the beating of my heart and I was positive that [unless] I got myself together [I would watch me fall apart]" "Who I am hates who I've been and who I am will take the second chance [you] gave me Who I am hates who I've been 'cause who I am [only ever] made me " "Cause then you'll see my heart in the saddest state it's ever been" I think "state" is a pun on the condition of his heart and one of the fifty states. Plus, in the next line he says "this is no place to try and live my life". Plus, the "line" in the chorus could be a state boundary? Maybe he "lost it" and ran away from his family or somebody else close to him? Ehh... kinda far-fetched, but something to think about. I like the line "I was positive that unless I got myself together I would watch me fall apart"; it's like either do or die, he's falling apart, so he's got to pull himself together. I didn't realize it for a few times of listening to it... |
| Relient K – The Only Thing Worse Than Beating A Dead Horse Is Betting On One Lyrics | 21 years ago |
the first part is missing some words... "Just listen to the politican wishing his position ((wan't missing everything his heart would)) like to say " I think this is the first (or one of the only) songs of semi-politicalness they've done... "Paper, rock, and scissors they all have their pros and cons " Like the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches of the US government. Balance of power, checks and balances. "And all of us we will endure Just like we always have But you just can't be too sure How long this will last " I think... "us" means the people living in America. "this" means the government, or our way of doing it? "Cause we control the chaos In the back of our minds Our problems seem so small But the grow on us like gravity But gravity still makes us fall" Problems in the government that seem to small to them but are in reality important, that the government has been distracted from or has and keeps putting off until later, and eventually they'll catch up and something bad will happen. |

| Relient K – Let It All Out Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I think it's leaning more towards making mistakes, like I So Hate Consequences. In the first verse, the imagery is that there's something in the blood that needs to be let out, like venom from a snakebite. I'm kinda foggy on the second half, but it strikes me an awful lot like: "For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." - Matthew 16:25 "And today I will trust you with the confidence Of a man who's never known defeat But tomorrow, upon hearing what I did I will stare at you in disbelief Oh, inconsistent me Crying out for consistency " he promises that he won't do something, and then he can't help himself when he's tempted to do it and gives in. Later the person he made the promise to finds out and confronts him about it, and he can't believe that he lost control again. That's something I've gone through so many times I've lost count. In the second verse, he describes the human condition of being weak; we're fallen creatures, and we should realize that we are. As they say, knowing's half the battle. But we're not perfectly imperfect,(how's that for a contradiction? It's like in the movie the Incredibles, how they say that if everybody's special, then nobody's special. Anyways...) and somewhere inside of us is the strength to defeat our problems (that grow on us, like gravity); hmm... then there's that image in Christianity of Jesus coming to live inside us... hmm... "If the burden seems too much to bear Remember The end will justify the pain it took to get us there" This is easily the best part of the song, IMHO. It's just... I don't know... moving, to think of how although we're going to have to go through all kinds of hardships in this life, the end goal of the joys of heaven will be more than worth it. That principle, of course, applies to almost everything in life; like in school, if you don't work and push yourself and suck up the discomfort, you won't learn. If you want to play sports, you've got to work. No pain, no gain. This, for me, is one of the best songs on this CD. And that's saying something, because it's an amazingly good CD. |

| Relient K – I So Hate Consequences Lyrics | 21 years ago |
"I had no idea where my head was at But if my heart says I’m sorry can we leave it at that " I experience this so often. He did something on an impulse or without thinking about it, and later he knows he did something wrong and is sorry, and doesn't want to face up to the consequences. Actually, that's pretty much the gist of the song. Story of my life... it's an issue of willpower. |
| Relient K – Be My Escape Lyrics | 21 years ago |
some corrections: "I’ve given up, _on_ giving up slowly" "This one last _bullet_ You mentioned" this is by far their best CD yet, IMHO. A bunch of their songs are about making and regretting mistakes, which is a subject that occupies a lot of my brain space. I love the (pre-)chorus; "Cause I’ve been housing all this doubt and insecurity and I’ve been locked inside that house all the while You hold the key And I’ve been dying to get out and that might be the death of me " he's locked inside his own (figurative) house (in effect, a jail cell) with his doubt and insecurity, and he wants to get out, but running away from his faults (like in I So Hate Consequences - "I got to get away/Get away from all of my mistakes") isn't the way it works (like in When I Go Down). Pain and failure and the like is an important part of life; no pain, no gain. You can't get buff and muscle-y without working out, breaking a sweat, making an effort. Similarly, there's the concept of constructive doubt, which basically says, "I don't know, but I want to find out". (It's like in Let It All Out [also a great song]- "I know this will hurt But if I don't break your heart, then things will just get worse. When the burden seems to much to bear, remember The end will justify the pain it took to get us there") and then I love this line: "And this life sentence that I’m serving I admit that I’m every bit deserving But the beauty of grace is that it makes life not fair" usually we only say something's not fair when we don't like it; but, even though we often don't acknowledge it, when something good happens to us that we don't deserve, it's not fair. That's the beauty of grace. |

I'm sure it's not what the song was meant to mean, and that I'm gonna get yelled at by some close-minded religion bashers, but I can't help but think that it's a perfect picture of our relationship with God. He loves us but hates what we do... hate the sin, love the sinner. It also applies to an addiction, like drugs or eating too much; you know it's bad for you, so you hate it. But you can't seem to keep yourself from going back to it time and time again, because you love the momentary physical (or otherwise) pleasure it gives you. |

| Switchfoot – Home Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I'm pretty sure "home" is heaven. "It's a long long way from paradise to where I am today " and then "Someday I’ll see home " This part's kinda cool, I think: "I've seen ashes shine like chrome Someday I’ll see home" "see[ing] ashes shine like chrome" is a picture of how it's going to be in heaven. The ashes are us humans. (From ashes to ashes and dust to dust) We're worthless next to God. When a Christian goes to heaven, he will shine like chrome, metaphorically speaking, because he's with God in a perfect place, no longer a heap of dirt/ashes. And then there's this: "It's a long way from the shadows in my cave Up to Your reality To watch the sunlight taking over, over " The philosopher Plato came up with the idea of a cave, where several people were chained to a wall and all they could see were shadows cast on the wall in front of them by a fire behind them. Since that's all they know, they grow to believe that those shadows are all that's real. But if one of them was set free and went up into the sunlight, at first it would hurt (his eyes) but then he would finally see what's really real. Here's a fuller explanation: http://faculty.washington.edu/smcohen/320/cave.htm |

Keep us from saying anything, can't separate from everything And all this really means is You're one in a crowd and you're paranoid of every sound Another friend you won't miss anyhow. " It seems pretty obvious to me that at least this part is how stupid the whole "punk/goth" trend is... you can't separate from everything. By rebelling against what's accepted and wearing Hot Topic crap, they're just conforming to a different "way of how you look, and how you act, and how you think" |
