Man, it's a hot one
Like seven inches from the midday sun
Well, I hear you whisper and the words melt everyone
But you stay so cool
My muñequita, my Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa
You're my reason for reason
The step in my groove

And if you said this life ain't good enough
I would give my world to lift you up
I could change my life to better suit your mood
Because you're so smooth
And it's just like the ocean under the moon
Oh, it's the same as the emotion that I get from you
You got the kind of lovin' that can be so smooth, yeah
Give me your heart, make it real, or else forget about it

But I'll tell you one thing
If you would leave it'd be a crying shame
In every breath and every word
I hear your name calling me out
Out from the barrio
You hear my rhythm on your radio
You feel the turning of the world, so soft and slow
It's turning you round and round

And if you said this life ain't good enough
I would give my world to lift you up
I could change my life to better suit your mood
Because you're so smooth
Well, and it's just like the ocean under the moon
Well, it's the same as the emotion that I get from you
You got the kind of lovin' that can be so smooth, yeah
Give me your heart, make it real, or else forget about it

Well, and it's just like the ocean under the moon
Oh, it's the same as the emotion that I get from you
You got the kind of lovin' that can be so smooth, yeah
Give me your heart, make it real, or else forget about it

Or else forget about it
Or else forget about it
Oh, let's don't forget about it
Give me your heart, make it real
Let's don't forget about it (hey)
Let's don't forget about it (now, oh, now, oh)
Let's don't forget about it (now, now, now, oh)
Let's don't forget about it (hey, now, now, oh)
Let's don't forget about it (hey, hey, hey)

I love this song. I think it captures the heat of the summer and this woman perfectly. I love the chorus:

"and it's just like the ocean under the moon / well that's the same as the emotion that I get from you / you've got the kind of lovin' that could be so smooth / give me your heart, make it real / or else forget about it"

gosh, I love that. carlos santana is incredible ... and teaming up with rob thomas was just ... awesome.

It's a description of a woman who is calm and mysterious, hence the comparison to the Mona Lisa and her enigmatic smile.

    this song is absolutely awesome.

it reminds me of the days id travel with my uncle. this was one of our favorite sing alongs.

    hes a big santana fan

its basically talking about a hook up or something that turned him around and he started really liking the girl and now he wants her to give him her heart to make his feelings worth it.

amazing guitars. and the fact that its in pop stations means nothing. liking or disliking a song because of what station plays it is bogus and shallow.

music is music. you like it or you dont.

Oh my GOSH I can't hear this song enough! It's Rob Thomas lamenting a girl and posing an ultimatum: "Give me your heart/make it real/or else forget about it."
This song is straight up sexy. Rob Thomas just makes it all the hotter. I could make it real for him in a heartbeat.

Hey, this is a place to interpret songs any way you like! Could be a double-meaning =p

such a sexy song... pictures summer romance quite nicely really, with a spanish woman making this guy want her through being all cool and not letting the heat of the moment get the better of her....

    Song Meaning

people seem to think that it was Santana who came up with this because of all the Spanish references, but it was actually Rob Thomas who wrote it. He wrote it for his wife Marisol, who's Puerto Rican.

I found this song in my itunes last week and it has been playing nonstop since then! If a radio could experience an orgasm, this song is the sound that orgasm would sound like!

This is about a woman who is basically suicidal and she is contemplating ending her life (if you said this life ain't good enough - I would give my world to lift you up to better suit your mood) - and a man (a musician) who is basically infatuated with her.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
