I understand the posted interpretations. However, coming from a similar climate to Norway, It can be very miserably cold and dispiriting. “Stillborn by choice, it has no need to hold” is an interesting line. Basically, the cold will lift, and so “ hold on my love” until we meet. I interpret this as a hope for the future. It will warm up and “we shall meet”.
“Where joy should rain, these skies restrain”; the skies are cloudy not joyful and sunny, so love/happiness is not immediately obvious. But he sings “we shall meet, I know”, so hold on my love and we will be together. The old man is alone, and cold, however is his love “shadows” or shields her capacity to love, they will be together. I guess I’m saying it’s a miserable, lonely, cold winter, but stay on this path and we will have love and happiness. And the cloudy skies just seem to make it worse. The song says it better, and I want it to be a message of hope and love ❤️!

@EdithAnn007 the old man is separate from the singer who will meet his love. The old man just lets us know the misery.
