This was one of my favorite songs growing up. I remember listening to it on my first day of high school, and thinking how prolific the whole "yeah man, we gotta grow up" part was.
Now, basically in my mid-twenties it represents something else entirely. Unbelievably.
It seems to be about drowning in a relationship. Losing yourself, but not in the classic sense of the phrase. You've lost yourself. You've retrogressed, plateaued.
And it's about the realization of saving yourself and what that will require--severing ties prematurely. Being the one to walk away. Accepting that if you don't end it, it will be the inevitable end of you.
