The Twistinside Lyrics

We have been sleeping
with the lights on
Just about every night
Because we are afraid what
the dark might bring
I know, I know it's just a childish fear
That grows and grows wild in the
middle of me
I'm gonna get a new tattoo
Black and stretching around my arm
Like a life that is visable and real
I know, I know it's stupid
and immature
I just want to give shape to the face
That twists inside
Both you and me

Breathing fire-
doesn't look good on a resume
Neither does anything else we do
We got to get ready for the real world
Yeah yeah we got to grow up

You know I like to die for awhile
Everyday in the afternoon
I like to let the arms of a bar
Wrap around me tight
I'm just going to sprawl
in the front booth
Big drink above my head
Cross eyes and smiling as
I watch the world
Go twisting by

I don't want to die with you,
Or live in the same dark room
I don't want to see your
bloodshot eyes no more, no more
I just want to take this girl-
all curls and big brown eyes
Man I can't take the pain
of wanting her, needing her

I know the secret of your soul
And I just don't want to know-
Yeah, man we got to grow up

this song is about loving someone and doing drugs with them. It's a one way ticket to hell when you share an addiction with a lover and if one person wants to straighten up you gotta leave the other down in the gutter "i dont wanna die with you" God, it hurts

I can't believe noone commented on this song...its one of my favorites. My favorite line is "I'm going to get a new tattoo black and stretching around my arm Like a life that is visable and real"
Who hasn't felt like making their pain physical and real?

"You know I like to die for awhile, Everyday in the afternoon I like to let the arms of a bar Wrap around me tight."

We all need some release in our days, especially when we feel like we aren't going anywhere. I used to do that too, it does help calm you down a bit. It can even be fun if you do it right.

This has been my favorite everclear song for years. I love the lyrics, especially this one...

"I don't want to die with you, Or live in the same dark room I don't want to see your bloodshot eyes no more, no more"

I think he's talking about himself here... he's sick of the direction his life is going and is realizing that he needs to grow up.

I LOVE it. I like how it builds up, rockin' hard towards the end. I could basically put the whole song in quotes and say it's my favorite.

please not that it's 2:20am

This was one of my favorite songs growing up. I remember listening to it on my first day of high school, and thinking how prolific the whole "yeah man, we gotta grow up" part was.

Now, basically in my mid-twenties it represents something else entirely. Unbelievably.

It seems to be about drowning in a relationship. Losing yourself, but not in the classic sense of the phrase. You've lost yourself. You've retrogressed, plateaued.

And it's about the realization of saving yourself and what that will require--severing ties prematurely. Being the one to walk away. Accepting that if you don't end it, it will be the inevitable end of you.

Can you tell what I'm dealing with...?

@massivetidalwave I agree ... @becfaz mentioned drugs too (which it could involve), but I interpret more in the sense that the relationship has made him "drunk/drugged".

Also when you love someone and then you miss them you do physically get all twisted inside ...
