I was thinking about Brad Delp's death and I listened to this song again, and then it hit me... it's a foreshadowing of his suicide. I never thought of it that way before, but it's uncanny. I love the song, though. It can be also a simple desire to escape the mundane or the world's injustices. Either way, this is a powerful song.

Way late to this party, but when I really listened, I told my wife this is a suicide song...get to the other side, leave it all behind. Decades before Brad took his life... But, it's too upbeat to be that...Gotta find Tom Sholtz and see what he was thinking...

@babyruth412 my first interpretation of the lyrics is that it is a song about suicide because of the lyric "carry me away for the last time", alluding to his pallbearers. my second interpretation is that the writer is weary and tired of his current situation, and just wants to "hitch a ride" on outta there, leave everything behind, get on a boat and "sail away" where "sun shines another day".

I do not think it is about suicide because Delp did not write the song; Tom Scholz did.
