Hitch A Ride Lyrics

Day is night in New York City
Smoke, like water, runs inside
Steel idle trees to pity
Every living things that's died

Gonna hitch a ride
Head for the other side
Leave it all behind
Never change my mind
Gonna sail away
Sun lights another day
Freedom on my mind
Carry me away for the last time
Oh yeah

Life is like the coldest winter
People freeze the tears I cry
Words of hail their minds are into
I've got to crack this ice and fly

Gonna hitch a ride
Head for the other side
Leave it all behind
Never change my mind
Gonna sail away
Sun lights another day
Freedom on my mind
Carry me away for the last time
Oh yeah

Gonna hitch a ride
Head for the other side
Leave it all behind
Never change my mind
Gonna sail away
Sun lights another day
Freedom on my mind
Carry me away for the last time
Oh yeah

Easily my favorite Boston song. The solo at the end is one of the best I've ever heard.

@jules4099 Same here. That solo outro can still bring me to tears after years of listeninng to it. How can something sound so beautiful and bittersweet? It's sort of sad and yet hopeful. I am determined to have this song played at my funeral.

Def, my favorite Boston song. I love the chorus and love how the song ends with the guitar breakdown. Amazing...

"I've got to crack this ice and fly"-love that line the best of all.

@emuInAmuumuu I was just going to write that . When I graduated in 1989 we had the option of putting a quote under our senior picture . I to this day I used this one .

I was thinking about Brad Delp's death and I listened to this song again, and then it hit me... it's a foreshadowing of his suicide. I never thought of it that way before, but it's uncanny. I love the song, though. It can be also a simple desire to escape the mundane or the world's injustices. Either way, this is a powerful song.

Way late to this party, but when I really listened, I told my wife this is a suicide song...get to the other side, leave it all behind. Decades before Brad took his life... But, it's too upbeat to be that...Gotta find Tom Sholtz and see what he was thinking...

@babyruth412 my first interpretation of the lyrics is that it is a song about suicide because of the lyric "carry me away for the last time", alluding to his pallbearers. my second interpretation is that the writer is weary and tired of his current situation, and just wants to "hitch a ride" on outta there, leave everything behind, get on a boat and "sail away" where "sun shines another day".

I do not think it is about suicide because Delp did not write the song; Tom Scholz did.

Love the band...possibly the best debut album of all time. Unforutunately I know every word to every song on the album :) This is an upbeat song with a wonderful guitar solo. Just a great song about hope.

@NooContact Surely you're joking. This song is anything but upbeat -- it's about suicidal ideation

I have always liked Boston since I was young in the 70’s. I think this is my favorite song by them and it is one of the reasons I began to play guitar. It is a type of neoclassical rock song, that is; it sounds like classical music in a way. Tom Scholz is an original with his effects and his background with the piano and engineering. The solo at the end is joyful and sad at the same time. It really is excellent the way he blends virtuosity with a feeling that does not come off as dry or clinical.

To me the song means that he would like to escape from the cold lifeless city and the sometimes thoughtless or cruel people one may find there.

It reminds me of driving in my car early in the morning out to my ski job, when the sun is shinning in my eyes on the interstate.

Since I already rated you up for this comment I will just say: "Yes. You are so on in everything you said here."

I can't agree more with all of the above -- except for the suicide foreshadowings... because Tom Scholz is credited with writing it, and not Brad Delp (one of the finest rock and roll voices ever...)

@kurtamus Tom may have had suicidal ideation -- he just may have beat those demons
