Ring The Bells Lyrics

Ring The Bells
Ring ring the bells
Wake the town
Everyone is sleeping
Shout at the crowd
Wake them up
This anger’s deeper than sleep
Got to keep awake to what is happening
I can’t see a thing through my ambition,
I no longer feel my God is watching over me
Got to tell the world we’ve all been dreaming
This is not the end, a new beginning
I no longer feel my God is watching over me

Break break the code
Concentrate
Let the doors swing open
See through all your walls
All your floors
Now you’re in deeper than sleep

Got to keep awake to what is happening
I can’t see a thing through my ambition,
I no longer feel my God is watching over me
Got to tell the world we’ve all been dreaming
This is not the end, a new beginning
I no longer feel my God is watching over me

When you let me fall
Grew my own wings
Now I’m as tall as the sky
When you let me drown
Grew gills and fins
Now I’m as deep as the sea
When you let me die
My spirit’s free
There’s nothing challenging me

This song saved my life. I went through a very difficult time in my life and suddenly felt drawn to this song, which I hadn't heard in my years. Odd, really, how an anti-religion song turned me to God. But it doesn't matter, this song has never failed to make everything seem so much brighter. It remains my number one favourite song, and I hope it always will be.

Thank you, James. For the help you have given me, and the help you will give me.

Memory

I'm glad you made it through that touch patch you experienced, but did it occur to you that the emotional state you were in at that time may contributed to your new found faith? Either way, song or not, I guess the source doesn't matter if it got you through tough times. :-) XOXO,, ~Suki

@Jemmargh This song does the same thing for me, for me I equate it to a more 'spiritual' state of being, rather than a more 'religious' view of God and the universe. It reminds me of John Lennon's Imagine.

I've always found this song to be uplifting.

Granted part of it is due to the fact that it brings memories of Giovanniy Ribisi blasting Jack Black to death with his magic missile.

I discovered this song watching x-files! I love it (both the show and the song) It's a great song to go running too - the drums, the lyrics; everything seems in place to keep you going.

@stryfehauk That's one of my favorite scenes from The X-Files - TrustNo1

This song is about waking up. In the same sense that Rage Against the Machine song "wake up" is about waking up. The same way the movie "the Matrix" is about waking up. The same way "The Allegory of the Cave" by Plato is about waking up. You have all been taught 'brainwashed' in a way to think certain things. Certain people want you to think this way. You don't know it, because you have not been taught these things, but you are a slave. You are controlled. You need to understand why. What is Serfdom? Do you know? Are you truely in control of your life? Who do you work for? Yourself or someone else? Do you own property? You can't own property if someone taxes you on it. Think. Learn. Wake up. Wake up the whole town. Shout at the crouds.. like Alex Jones. Ring the bells. Wake them up. Now you're in deeper than sleep. WAKE UP PEASANTS. Free humanity from slavery. Peasants are slaves. Serfdom is slavery. Wake up!

Song Meaning

America was founded as a free republic. We are no longer a free republic. We are a democracy. Democracy is slavery and one step closer to total government control. The opposite of what a Republic is. And to the Republic for which it stands.

now listen to the song again

oh course... thats just my opinion.. The writer knows what it really meant to him. It could be all about waking up from religion because I beleive that also is just a way to control people... but so is a democratic government . A republic is freedom. It's why America was the land of the free. We are no longer free. And I hope you will wake up. And wake others.

this is about realizing that god does not exist...
the bells he talks about seem to be those found often at the top of churches; they're loud and can be heard across town. It goes on to say tell the whole town to wake up and listen to what he has to say: that god wasn't there for him, that people are living a dream within religion. the final verse is about letting go of god and how he and the world evolved beyond him.

"Grew my own wings ... Grew gills and fins"

he overcame religion's let-downs and as a double meaning can also be seen as evolution where animals evolved wings, gills, and fins to adapt to their environment (over millions of years) and god didn't just create everything in 7 days.

I don't find this song to be "anti-religion" nor atheist... Yeah, this is one of those songs that you "live" inside of you in the moments when you feel that maybe God has forgotten about you... but hey, that's a normal feeling, we are just humans, even Jesus felt that way for a moment in the cross... but then the song just give you the strenght you need to surpass anything that can be hurting you... just like Jemmargh, I just went through very difficult momentS and even when sometimes I have felt like if God is not here for me, this song helps me and gives me the strenght... and then I realize, that for sure it was God who let me find this song...

I hear this song as a spiritual rallying cry. It's calling for everyone to wake up from their self-imposed bonds and to a broader interpretation of God and life. I hear the chorus as a lamentation of the loss of God in one's life due to 'ambition' and similar things that can cloud one's perception. The use of the word 'my' in the chorus instead of 'like' is interesting and one of the reasons why I reject the anti-religion interpretation. Rather, I think it's anti-zealot.

My Interpretation

When approached by rabid fans with questions about the meanings of various Beatles lyrics, Lennon, McCartney, and even George Harrison often said things like, "it's just a collection of pretty words - there's not really a deeper meaning." It annoyed the heck out of them that their fans would always read elaborate meanings into their song lyrics. As humans, we have a lot in common - that's why song lyrics sound so familiar - it's really very simple.
