Wait For An Answer

Well, this is my first one on interpreting a song so I am probably wrong but I don't know. Tell me what you guys think... Anyway I think this song is about the Jews and how they were constantly being persectued. Here's where I draw up my thoughts:

I'm pretty sure in the bible it states that God made the Jews his chosen people. Also 'we're the last descendents' of the Holy Land. That's what I think.

In lower airs we're ground down by their ignorance

Well, that's an answer in its own. Ignorant people, those who do not understand, despised the Jews.

Hate will grow like a foul cancer To find a foe seems to be the answer Round and round it goes on and again oh I can't get it out of my head

Jews are always the scapegoats. Always, the very first religion someone blames. Well that is my analyzing on this song... Though the last lines sort of don't go with my idea but let me know what you all think.

Sadly there is no deep interpretations here. Hansi has said the song is an original concept of his that was based off a story he wrote having to do with a rabbit that becomes friends with a crow. Now there isn't much detail as to what the story pertains, but there are probably plenty of allegories. So actually the song is about intolerance, just not as specific as it seems, and it has nothing to do directly with Nazi Germany as I once thought.

Actually taking a better look at the song I can intepret it a little differently

Definately about a certain european country between 1932 and 1945

The line of valiant soldiers are the Teutonic Knights, which the SS saw themselves as being a rebirth of.

And one of the reasons that people don't get it is the fact that IIRC the original coat of arms for the first unified germany had a black eagle as it's standard.

As far as I'm concerned, the song is pretty blatant. Spend an hour watching any documentary about neofascism, nordicism and white supremacy adherents and you will hear much of the same banter.

The schools teach you that everyone is equal and that Hitler was a lunatic guilty of genocide, while in fact - according to the shaved-headed lads - the caucasian race is distinctly superior to all others and Hitler was a great leader and a misunderstood philosopher. The third reich is the fallen kingdom, slandered in history by the whole modern world.

The basics of fundamentalist brainwash: a glorified past and claims to some 'noble' bloodline. In this case the mythicised Aryan race, which name - ironically - originally referred to Indo-Iranians. A far cry from the modern blonde and blue-eyed connotation. The blackbird refers to the German coat of arms, a black eagle (or maybe a 'pure and blessed' hawk) on a yellow background. The last line in this passage may speak about the 'racial holy war' the neonazis want. An open conflict between white people and all other ethnic groups. "A war in which your side has already been chosen for you."

I'm white I am chosen

No interpretation needed, I believe. This one is quite obvious.

The white have to mingle with the 'impure' breeds on a daily basis. Imagine the outrage of a neonazi racist to find out that there are black people in the same school, or even in the same class, as his children. And that the 'ignorant' whites fail to see the indignity of it.

The hopeful he sadly admits there's no hero No place to hide there is no shelter from the storm

They may be the hate-mongering fundamentalists but they are still in minority, so a vital part of their bonding practices is creating an image of righteous rebellion. "We are the chosen few oppressed by the world-wide non-white/Jewish conspiracy." Nothing steels the resolve of a combatant like an Evil Empire to overthrow.

The maddened crow will spread terror But I know bitterly they will stumble Find themselves smashed on the ground

"The fight will be bloody and brutal and the righteous will suffer many a crippling wound but in the end they shall prevail." Again the future-glory motivation technique.

The chorus is basically a call to other like-minded people to stop brooding and start acting. A call to arms or at least to some form of activism.

I find it sad when metal is used to divide young people and to spread bigotry of any sort. It feels even worse when one of my favourite bands turns out to be steeped in fundamentalism and nazi bullshit. I do hope this is just overinterpretation on my side but it seems highly unlikely. Considering the fact that Blind Guardian is a German band, this would all have to be one giant coincidence. A shame. It is a kickass song, nonetheless.

How does everyone miss this? They're called the bards, and I think it pretty obvious that it was was meant to be about Guts vs Griffith from Berserk. The Black and White hawks.

WARNING! Plenty of spoilers ahead.

Soldiers together, Griffith eventually betraying them all for power and glory - In the most despicable manner possible. Raping a woman who once loved him, and he saved from the very same act once upon a time. Who eventually gave up on him, and got together with Guts, the Black Hawk. All this as he sacrifices the friends that just saved him to monsters, and only Guts survives, losing an arm in his attempt to save the woman in question. She goes completely insane after this(becomes like a child, and loses the ability to speak).

The various decent guys in "The Band of the Hawk" that were labelled as criminals after having saved the country(of which Griffith once was one), are the mistreated angels. And worst of them all is Guts(The Black Hawk), who has lived a long life of abuse, betrayal, and general misery.

Blind Guardian's own website hints that this is indeed about the Nazi propaganda machine; but the song is fundamentally from the perspective of two victims of that evil mechanism.

BG uses the same singer (Halsi) for most characters, which can get confusing as to "who" is saying what. In this song there are three characters: the hare and the fox, who are both targets of the third character, the mad crow (an allegory for a very specific asshole who had black hair, and who was proud, hateful and unhinged).

The hare is terrified by the rise of the mad crow and his followers. The fox says the hare is not wrong, things really are going to shit. The crow says [literal nazi propaganda talking points]. The POV shifts back to the fox, who is skeptical that there's any hope, and the hare who says:

t's you who has said there's no tomorrow [the analytically minded fox has no hope left]

I don't know but who I am [the hare will survive! that's what he do]

I wouldn't sit back any longer [time to run and hide, man, we can't pretend any more]

It's surely built in sadness [there will absolutely be worse times to come]

But the sadness surely will go by [they won't last forever]

So we will all know the answer [survive however you can, my friend]

The answer's within, it's in your mind [don't let me tell you, you know what you need to do]
