i like when he realizes he has been hurting people because he really didn't love himself...he was trying to feel better then he really was....I love this song tim mcgraw rocks!
this is one of the saddest songs i've ever heard.. i was the patty sue to somebody's tim and he used to always tell me "one of these days"..
To me, this is just a great song. But, I think that what it means is, he treated these people badly in the past, and they told him that it was a mistake, and they could have been good friends. So in the end, he realizes (through going to church) that he did not love himself, and now he will find peace with god, and he regrets what he did in the past. That is what I think is what this song is about.
To me, it's about the realization that if you have self-respect and can be honest to yourself, you will never again need to hurt and put others down just to feel better. It's not even about the people he treated badly, but the fact he couldn't ever be "good friends" with himself is the root of all problems, and it's a devastating thing to figure out.
dang i feel like the patty sue in this song right now.. my high school sweetheart just left me cause he kissed another woman and was afraid he would do more or wouldnt quit what he had already done... but one of these days...

I read that as saying that he is not yet saved because he won't forgive himself for his past deeds. But one of these days that will change (How? It's your move, bud.) and it'll be such a pleasant experience. In the meantime he'll stay in the hell of his own mind and risk dying before he escapes.
