Painter Song Lyrics
If I were a painter
I would paint my reverie
If that's the only way for you to be with me
We'd be there together
Just like we used to be
Underneath the swirling skies for all to see
And I'm dreaming of a place
Where I could see your face
And I think my brush would take me there
But only...
If I were a painter
And could paint a memory
I'd climb inside the swirling skies to be with you
I'd climb inside the skies to be with you
I would paint my reverie
If that's the only way for you to be with me
Just like we used to be
Underneath the swirling skies for all to see
Where I could see your face
And I think my brush would take me there
But only...
And could paint a memory
I'd climb inside the swirling skies to be with you
I'd climb inside the skies to be with you

I've always thought this was about nostalgia about a very close friend who has passed away (inside the skies = heaven). I do have a very good friend who I always think about when I hear this song... and each time, I imagine painting a memory of him and being able to enjoy more time with him.
this reminds me of my teacher/mentor that I cared about who also passed away. Many of my fondest memories are with her.

I like this song. Really slow and lazy. Made me wished I were also a painter who 'painted' a life with someone special. Kind of reminds me of the feeling you get with you've discovered you are in love. :)
This sing is so beautiful! Her voice is really calm and breazy in this song, and makes u just wanna lay back and dream! The meaning is pretty easy, she likes this guy but she cant be with him, so she wishes she was a painter, and could paint pictures with them two together! Beautiful song!
Perfect love. Someone you love but never will be with so you paint a whole scene of the two of you together. Fantasy dreaming. I love it. Sometimes its all you can do. Norah Jones speaks for all the lost loves and does it better than anyone. And so young herself. She must have an old soul.
I was wondering if anyone knew if this was her song, or if someone else did this song before?? Please PM me if you know, I would really like to know...it's a WONDERFUL song!
i think that this song is about how she used to be with this guy, but then they went their own separate ways and she wishes that there was a way to reunite with him so they could be together again....i love this song its one of my favorites on this album!
This is my favourite song, i love it so much.it makes me think of my love with my darling. This song speaks for all the ones who love each other...Ik hou van je Korneel...
I can relate to this song a lot. It's so beautiful. To me, it's a song about unrequitted love.
This song is so romantic. It is about daydreaming about the way things were and wishing that you could paint a picture of it and get inside the picture. I think she would rather be with the memory version him than really be with him in real life. I love the music that goes with this song. It's so dreamy. I think there is an accordian or something. That's my favorite part. It really goes with the lyrics.
I think this has got some references to "A Starry Night" by Van Gogh. Not quite a love song but trying to understand the artist at the time. "Underneath the swirling skies for all to see" obvisious reference to the giant moving skies in the painting. Maybe a love for the artists work? Van Gogh also did alot of self portraits "Where I could see your face" and a starry night was painted from memory while Van Gogh was in a mental institution.
@valkyrie1223 Why do I think of The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gough when I listen to these lyrics. Well, Vincent was a painter who painted swirling clouds. I don’t know if this painting was the inspiration for this song, maybe, maybe not but every time I listen I can’t help thinking of Vincent’s swirling brush strokes. Regardless, a beautiful song, with beautiful lyrics and music sung with Norah’s great sensitivity.
