how about disposable men referring to soldiers? suffering kept within, then lost inside "healing has to begin in the past" could refer to the emotional scars they have

Thematically, this song seems similar to Comfortable Liar. Someone lied, or misled and it causes pain and suffering.

"refusing to rust" and "healing has to begin in the past" are references to the fact that time doesn't seem to change anything. The hurts stings just as bad now as it did then.

The thing I really don't understand is the begining. "Afraid to blink, I might lose the sun" and "Yes, you're my son."

A reference to God? He's losing his faith (in God/ humanity?) because people are phony.

Seeing as no one has really hit the nail on the head, I took the liberty to create an account here just so I can take this song apart and explain why it has to do with their father.

Ignoring A loss of sight Afraid to blink I might lose the sun

Hinting that they're losing reason ("sight") but their father ignores this. Yet still they try to take every opportunity they can to find their reason (the "sun"). The images of sight and the sun are metaphor relating to their light in life.

But don't Make this out To be more Than it isn't

Behind Every lie There's a Burden within

At this point the perspective is now in the eyes of their father. Thus showing that the father thinks they're being too ambitious and naive ("more than it isn't"). Then he explains that their life as musicians is a lie with too much of a burden for them to handle.

Yes, you're my son!

This line pretty much solidifies my interpretation. At this point the brothers have already disowned their father, but their father is still trying to force his existence onto them.

Now we go back to the perspective of the brothers. This is pretty self-explanatory in that it shows that they keep try to keep their suffering to themselves and that their father disposes them as if they are not useful and “lost”

Inside He was negative This place Once more was underground

This is one of the brothers (or all of them) looking inside themselves about their feelings towards it. Everything is “negative” but kept away hidden, or “underground”

Healing Has To begin In the past

With the refusing to rust line, it shows that they are beginning to stand up to their father and his unsupportiveness. The healing line has to do with it being way too late for them to warm up to their father now.

This is pretty much the brothers saying they really are living and won’t accept their father’s disapproval or “faking” of their life.

Well this is still merely my interpretation, but I find it to be the most correct in that it actually links every single lyric together into a finished puzzle. Most of these interpretations only seem to last for one or two lines until there’s nothing else that really supports it.

I believe this song in general to be about a dysfunctional relationship between family members (like a father & son). I think it's about how we can't ignore the past disharmony & fake a relationship as if it's already been healed. The real healing has to take place, either through therapy or just a deep person to person discussion. To fake it & act like you're all good when the tension is still there from a hurtful childhood for example is no way to live & then what happens is nothing gets ever truly resolved.

Very odd lyrics. The opening to the song is so beautiful, and the ending is so angry. Whatever Chevelle writes about, they mean it 600%

I think that this song is about superficiality, and how nobody seems to be themselves anymore. "Disposable men" could signify that people can throw away their entire personas and build new ones at any given time, if it will gain them more popularity. Whatever this song means, it's a masterpeice.

Wow, this is definetely one of my fav songs off of Chevelle's new album... yes I agree with how the lyrics are odd and hard to put together as a whole... but I kinda got an idea of what it means.

When he says "The suffering, that's kept within, disposable men, lost" he's referring to people who bottle up their emotions (particularly anger), and just decide to ignore their feelings all together... to avoid the hurt and suffering attached. But in doing so, they lose themselves and become "disposable", not knowing who they really are. It's like they can change and control who they are for a certain moment - "don't fake this."
