Thematically, this song seems similar to Comfortable Liar. Someone lied, or misled and it causes pain and suffering.
"refusing to rust" and "healing has to begin in the past" are references to the fact that time doesn't seem to change anything. The hurts stings just as bad now as it did then.
The thing I really don't understand is the begining.

A reference to God? He's losing his faith (in God/ humanity?) because people are phony.
