Send The Pain Below Lyrics
I liked having hurt
So send the pain below
Where i need it
You used to beg me to take
Care of things
And smile at the thoughts of me failing
But long before having hurt
I'd send the pain below..
Much like suffocating
I'd send the pain below
You used to run me away
While laughing
Then cry about that fact till i returned
But long before have been hurt
I'd send the pain below
I can't feel my chest...anymore
Dropped down
I liked having hurt
So send the pain below
So send the pain below
Where i need it
Care of things
And smile at the thoughts of me failing
But long before having hurt
I'd send the pain below..
I'd send the pain below
While laughing
Then cry about that fact till i returned
But long before have been hurt
I'd send the pain below
So send the pain below

I think this song is about someone who has endured a painful, dark period in their life and the pain has cut so deep it's become suffocating. This song is them fighting back against the negative wave and instead using that pain and dark energy as a jumping off point, making it become almost cathartic & therapeutic.
@EternalTearsOfSorrow perfect description, this song is like a person suffers a chronic illness, such as anxiety anxitie

God dammit, you people have no sense when it comes to the actual meaning of the song. Alright, this song is obviously about this guy's experience with one bitch of a girlfriend and how he put up with it incident after incident after incident. Until he finally dumps her and looks back at the experience saying "I liked being hurt", so he doesn't like being hurt anymore. And the suffocating was forcing himself to stay with her despite the she gave him.
Calm the fuck down dude, its just a song. You're supposed to find your own meaning in music, there is no right or wrong answer. Plus Chevelle is notorious for making up fake meaning for there songs just so people don't spend all there time worrying about what Pete meant when he wrote it and make a real connection to the music. Not to mention the music video provides a completely different interpretation of the lyrics.

@sandman18and5 Plausable even if the lyrics are maddeningly vague.I'm not sold but think starfox69 was way too harsh on your interpretation. It make as much sense as anything else I've heard but until I hear the band members with their own interpretation I will withhold judgement.

@sandman18and5 What kind of pain do you think he's talking about? Its not from a relationship breakup or a broken heart. You are an idiot. I made this account just so I could reply to your moronic idiocy. Go back to the drawing board, Einstein.. Or maybe you should keep your opinions to yourself. We live in a country with 340 million opinions, and unfortunately, half of them are as uninformed as yours is. This is why this country is in so much trouble. But luckily Donald Trump is going to take care of that. Starting 1-20-25,...

Basically this perfectly describes the process of going numb. "But long before having hurt, I'd send the pain below." This is the "grin and bear it" mentality as you "send the pain below." After having done this repeatedly..."much like suffocating," eventually leads to..."I can't feel my chest, drop down, because I am," until you are comfortably numb and reflect upon a time when you could feel, even if it hurt; "I liked having hurt." Their ability to so concisely express it is amazing! Great band!
@idgy That what it feels most like to me as well! The time in my life that I felt this song to my core, was while numb. I learned "be careful what you wished for", as I had once wished to not feel any more.

The lines...
You used to run me away while laughing Then cry about the fact till I returned
...they would have been the perfect voice-over for a relationship I was in a few months back. It was a constant on/off back-n-forth battle. Push & Pull... etc.
Chevelle rules. I can't wait to see them live (again)
I just saw them live Wednesday. They're amazing.
I just saw them live Wednesday. They're amazing.
There's an error in these lyrics. It should be ...
I like having hurt
instead of
Hard lives have been hurt
