Curious to know how much later the live addition was added to his original? While the indication of Mary seems quite blasphemous, it seems as though the latter perhaps was added quite sometime later when he became more radical in his views.
P.S. I can't really suggest blasphemy myself, but accordingly it seems so. Bare with me here; "Mary dropped her pants by the sand and let a person come take her hand." This (to me) suggests that the virgin Mary and her husband Joseph conceived a human child, Jesus, and is reitterated by, "but the soul of no body knows, where the parson (person?) goes." Well, I guess mine is as far fetched as the UFO. Still, we cling to the shore. Just a (horrid) thought. |

| Jackson Browne – Late for the Sky Lyrics

Late for the sky...where dreams become and where you are allowed to soar, yet he is late. All of his dreams were grounded and never allowed to take flight, but such is the plight of those drifting alone, along through the night.
And it's exactly where he leads us with his words, to the words between the lines, that allow deep personal meaning to transpire.
Not to mention that guitar which thanks for the chords, MMMerry, as I'm just beginning to learn to play the acoustic! |

You aren't the only fan! And while I hear this to be more about closure and less about desperation, he sums it up perfectly in closing with, "late for the sky." While not much a fan of his voice, the guitar, absolutely brilliant writing, and...*sigh* gorgeous face then, and even now...Jackson Browne....ahhhhhh, a forever great! |

Not too much of a country song, though undoubtedly it is...however, knowing Jackson Browne once participated playing the jugs or something like that in this rockin' California band, puts this a bit along the frindges of a distinct genre. Anyhow, one of the greatest songs EVER! "Baby, get ready..." |

| Lady GaGa – Born This Way Lyrics

Instead of rate this comment up or down, I prefer to voice my opinion by saying that I exponentially disagree with gagga for many reasons. As a non believer, I do not believe that god has made anyone anyway. We arrive with half the stock (genes) of two people, male and female. There are a multitude of external factors that shuffle and play musical chairs with our genome and the end product is mostly random, though not as random as modern science can define.
I just spent the evening with a long time friend who I hold very dear who is also gay and I do not believe god had anything to do with that, nor do I really care. He is an amazing person and i do not see him as anything else. Although he arrived from half the stock, he will never contribute that, and while it deeply affects me, it is something he also understands and is comfortable with. My heart is with him, not my judgement. Pictures of him holding my children and remembering that tonight with a replied "awww" makes me wish for him to pass on his tremendously gracious heart to a generation of others....but he never will, and he knows and accepts that.
So, gaga presents an oxymoron to me as in she is just a moron for attempting this...and I guess I am as well for posting this, but so are you for yours. Eh, oh well. |

Thanks for the info! I never made the connection, but after reading up on Pert, it makes perfect sense! As JGault1 suggested, today's Tom Sawyer does resemble Roark. I now am excited to hear this classic again inlieu of it's inspiration! |

What IS dear which is how she feels, but does not solely operate with that. She let go for real reasons, but can't let go for for other reasons as well and tried to drown the pain. Anywho, they are amazing and i need to read up a bit more on how they came to be. I love artist who are emotionally honest and whos music reflects that, such as this beautiful duo! |

Totally agree and had not heard their music until this site. Surprisingly, for the first time, I heard them on the radio tonight (unless they are popular and I am unaware because I listen to mostly classic rock) so, yeah...best thing thats happened to music lately, for sure! Also, when I hear red balloon I immediately think Shindlers List, but couldn't read more into that so i do agree with you that there is some sort of depraved love of sorts.
Maybe I get it...the red balloon...red. being passion, anger, or at least extreme emotion filled with air (lacking substance, and could easily float away) yet she clings to it never the less...she holds a string that.keeps her bounded to hot air for what? Does she even know? Perhaps not...
Clinging to nothing within the comforts of solitude keeps her lonely, thus she keeps him alive. She's in love and won't be again because its safe...always near, always alone...holding close what I'd dear, yet gone. |

Starwatcher, thank you for such an intricate analysis, I never considered this song as you describe. However, despite religious beliefs or societal adherence to moral restrictions, are you suggesting abandonment of reason as being the evolutionary culprit of advancement? I would consider the ability to reason and a precise evaluation of consequences rendered from erroneous actions to be responsible for progress and not for the mere persuit of. Your synopsis of the linguistic element is profound and definitely a big high five, but also it is thought that the discovery of fire by our primitive ancestors actually is responsible for increasing the size of the brain as artifacts of both validate the time line. Would this be a homonoid seeking progress, or using or using reason? More an example of revolutionizing the envelope secondary to utilization via reason and not the pushit approach the arrived us to present day, but just a thought. Thanks for a conjurinistic view for a very merry Christmas! ;)
P.S. conjurinistic isn't a word, but sure sounds nice...LOL.

Personally love this song even more for, "and a woman too, God knows she can feel like this" because All too many times a Man artist can express what I feel more than a female artist. As for the meaning, when you get caught up in the world and feel lost, when your planned destination is far from expected, when you look in the mirror and don't know who you are anymore...it's time to get back to your roots, and then you will remember...You! Your very soulshine is better than sunshine (illusions), moonshine (alone at night with a glass of sumthin'), and damn sure better than rain (the downfall). One of the most uplifting song...ever! |

I fully agree with the above but would also add that the part, " love swept in like Storm" suggests that there was the absence of love already for you can't love two people at once unless the people are your children. However, respect is also a function of love albeit a brotherly love, and this song does a great job depicting such anguish... |

Great song for when you can sense someone's presence but can never pin it down. I'm sure there are other songs a bit more suitable for what I'm trying to express, but the line, "askin' bout a diamond ring, they just look at you like you've lost your mind and say they haven't seema thing" dives it home for me. Especially, "well I know he's been here lately." But then again... |

| Jewel – Goodbye Alice in Wonderland Lyrics
| 14 years ago
|
It's, "trying to figure out my life."
"hotel rooms and headlights"
"searching" and "wanting" need reversed...and makes more sense.
"these are not tears in my eye, they are only a reflection of my lonely mind finding; I found what's missing in my life."
Also, there is a particular "crick?" of the guitar in the very beginning that, for some reason, just does something to me and perhaps the entire song could have followed in that direction instead of incorporating so many different instruments. Only Van Morrison can diversify like that with the guitar remaining the subtle "lead" through a mess of tunes, if that even makes sense. There is hardly a vocabulary to describe the music, when usually it is the most important element of a song and is much more moving than the vocals unless they just blow you away. Jewel may not be "the best," but she is because she is unique (-2 for going pop, -3 for going country though). Great song. |
