Spanish Doll Lyrics
This place feels so unfamiliar
And yet I know it well
I think I used to belong here
But the only way I can tell
Is that I miss you still
And I cannot find you here
You left me tattered and torn
Just like that Spanish doll
Sweet, spanish, sweet, spanish... doll
I went down to the alleyway
(Sierra la Bonita)
And found that you were gone
[si nunca te fueras (if you had never left)]
You left no word no message
I still don't know exactly what went wrong
[lagrimas (tears)]
And now no matter where I go
I always seem to return
[Spanish doll: busca me (find me)]
To where you left me tattered and torn
[yo estoy rompido mi muñeca (I am torn my sweet doll)]
Just like that sweet spanish doll
Sweet, spanish, sweet spanish doll
A memory gilded in red and gold
[del oro (of gold / pain)]
Beauty guarded and never sold
[cuida me (protect me)]
I keep it with me wherever I go
And I love you still
[recuerda me (remember me)]
No matter how the story will unfold
You know I always will
[rescáta me (rescue me)]
Keep a part of you here
In this souvenir
Spanish doll
A stranger in this world without you
Is all that I can ever be
All I know that's pure and clear
You left it with me here
In this souvenir
Spanish, spanish, spanish, spanish doll
[Father: We hear of a lovely daughter, shot down in her mistaken flight]
Sweet, spanish, sweet
[Father: Unaware yet how her life will be affected by this experience.]
Busca me (find me)
[Daughter: Mommy, how come you cry?]
Sweet spanish doll
[Father: While what was really happening in the years of her childhood, perhaps that's where the real story is... In her family house.
Daughter: How come it's a house of leaves?]
Sweet spanish, sweet spanish
[Daughter: How come it's a house of leaves?
Audience cheers: Brava! ]

A pity no one's commented on this song; it's an especially beautiful example of the album's two themes: the novel "House of Leaves" by Poe's brother Mark Danielewski, and the loss of her father. The doll in the song is owned by the little girl Daisy in the story, and this extremely haunting song seems to express both the repercussions of the novel upon Daisy, as well as a more personal expression of Poe's own loss.
Excellent, thank you! I didn't get the House of Leaves reference until you mentioned it, read it too long ago.

I love this song. I hate when people don't comment on great songs.
Poe eloquently uses Spanish, dubbing, and a lot of other great techniques to make this song unique.
Very sad song about loss, and how fragile relationships are.
Yeah it's a song about loss to me. It really hit home when I lost my father a little over a year ago. Even before that, I though this was probably one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Still is...
Say you loved someone and they showed you a part of thier life and over time you shared that part of thier life and you made it somewhat yours.
Then one day you lose that person.
All the beauty of the place you once shared becomes tainted and feels strange without them there. The person that opened that door up for you is gone and now it feels wrong walking through that door alone.
That is my take on this song and I think it is probably her father she is speaking of.
I love the whole vibe of this song.
i miss my dad. i love this song.
I agree that it is one of the most beautiful, most haunting songs that I have ever heard, in terms of both melody and lyrics.
