Pillars Of Eternity Lyrics
crumbling world falls
through my hands.
in my mouth
taste bitter sands.
grass is burning,
pulse is slow.
drip by drip my back-
wards growth ....crawl
fade to hate.
and I'll die within my fade-
wine, song, women, birth -
this deflowered mother earth
planting, plowing, how she grieves.
the seeds that grow these dying trees.
Crawl...
fade to hate.
and I'll die within my fade
fade to hate.
and I'll die within your fade
through my hands.
in my mouth
taste bitter sands.
grass is burning,
pulse is slow.
drip by drip my back-
wards growth ....crawl
fade to hate.
and I'll die within my fade-
wine, song, women, birth -
this deflowered mother earth
planting, plowing, how she grieves.
the seeds that grow these dying trees.
Crawl...
fade to hate.
and I'll die within my fade
and I'll die within your fade

This song is about so much, it surprises me to see no one has commented on it yet. "deflowered mother earth" Reminds me of Steinbeck's Graped Of Wrath, where he equates the plowing of earth to the rape of a woman. Its about how fucked up our world is, this is obvious. But as Maynard said, all songs have more than one meaning.
First of all, I have to make a correction because, it isn't "wine, song, women, birth". It has to be "wine, sang, women, birth". Sang is French and means blood. With sang/blood it makes more sence, becaus the two words fit together: wine - sang/blood and women - birth.
I also think that this song is about how we treat nature and destroy the world in which we are living.
Yeah, I agree with the first two cholos. It seems pretty self explanitary. I also think that the name of the song could have been an intentional oxy moron. Pillars are man made and therefore won't last forever, they're mortal which is an opposite of eternity. Even after everything is gone, time will exist and eternity will go on. This along with the corrosion of the planet i think are the message, ...but i don't know if i really got into phil's head.
Well, actually i remember, at a DOWN show, Phil saying this song was about acid. But I've never taken acid so can't really relate to it.
Pepper Keenan said this song was about shrooms
