i like both of what Grug and p3nguinpi3 are getting at. when i used to listen to this song over and over again few years ago in my dorm, it always gave me the impression that younger people are more open minded and therefore able to receive the "Starman", he warns his friend not to tell the parents, and so far the narrator and his friend are the ones who are able to perceive the STarman's communication. i am leaning towards the Starman representing englightenment of some kind. the parents, older generation are closed-minded and their judgements have been controlled by things like culture and religion. remember, he'd "blow our minds"! = too much of a shock for our learned beliefs. perhaps my opinion is biased by the fact that i was listening to this song at a period of my life where i left the church cos i thought it was too stifling and intolerant.

Does everyone forget this is a concept album? It's about an extraterrestrial rock star who comes to earth and rocks out and tries to save the world through his music. And most importantly this is glam rock so it's all about inflating the importance of rock and roll and celebrating itself. Ziggy's story throughout the album is really just a metaphor for the rise and fall of rock and roll itself in the 1950s. Rock and roll was originally a fad, and it did die a nasty death in the late 50s. Keep in mind that the number 1 song played on the radio before the Beatles breathed new life into rock and roll with their first hit single, was "How Much is that Doggy in the Window". Yeah... So Starman is about Ziggy, the alien, broadcasting totally crazy rock and roll music on the radio from outerspace and the kids are digging it, and their parents don't get it, and Ziggy has the confidence and audacity to tell everyone that it's rock and roll that will save the world. And all that is just a science fiction metaphor for the arrival and acceptance of rock and roll by kids in the '50s, from the point of view of Bowie as a huge rock enthusiast.
But is Ziggy the Starman? I don't think so. Ziggy becomes a rock star in order to reach the masses and inform them of the coming of the Starman. The Starman chose him, but in the end, he loses touch with his purpose and his ego overtakes his purpose, which destroys him in the end.

if there is life on other planets, and these beings are capable of picking up our radio and television transmissions, then they should be quite afraid to visit our planet, based on the crap that's broadcasted nowadays.

Because that is exactly how his character knew about the things on earth, they watched in on television. In fact, he makes a TV commercial specifically to send a message to his family back home.

I think it's about how children choose idols because their own lives are so bleak and ordinary. They choose a "Starman" who, they believe, will make everything better or at least make them feel a little better.
I love the thought that if there are aliens out there then their message to humainty would be "Let the children lose it Let the children use it Let all the children boogie" Its actually beautiful in a wierd way, the thought that something we've searched for forever, a sign that we're not alone, wouldn't be interested in telling us how to live our lives, telling us that we were wrong, they wouldn't want to invade... they'd just want us to dance. Something that simple I think that dancing in the song is a metaphor for enjoying life, without a care, so I think that maybe this song could be Bowie basically saying that we all just need to enjoy ourselves, because maybe thats all aliens would expect us to do
I know I sound stupid and crazy, but that's just my opinion. I know it's from a concept album, but even songs from concept albums can have a deeper meaning underneath their superficial one.

I think the song is commenting on the general close-mindedness of adults, and how we're so set in our ways and oppose change. So yeah, the Starman could be the literal meaning (ie. he's an alien and wants nothing to do with most of our race) or he could represent change (for the better). That's my interpretation anyway.
You could base a whole religion on this!!! Like, there is a huge, mega-awesome alien out there, who influences tv and radio, and he would come down but everyone's minds would blow up because of the awesomness of it. So children should be taught only to communicate and understand stuff with dance, and so when he does come it will be worthwhile for them and they can all boogie together!
