Get It On (Bang A Gong) Lyrics

Well, you're dirty and sweet
Clad in black, don't look back and I love you
You're dirty and sweet, oh yeah
Well, you're slim and you're weak
You've got the teeth of the hydra upon you
You're dirty, sweet and you're my girl

Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on

Well, you're built like a car
You've got a hubcap diamond star halo
You're built like a car, oh yeah
Well, you're an untamed youth
That's the truth with your cloak full of eagles
You're dirty, sweet and you're my girl

Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on (oh)

Well, you're windy and wild
You've got the blues in your shoes and your stockings
You're windy and wild, oh yeah
Well you're built like a car
You've got a hubcap diamond star halo
You're dirty, sweet and you're my girl

Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on

Well, you're dirty and sweet
Clad in black, don't look back and I love you
You're dirty and sweet, oh yeah
Well, you dance when you walk
So let's dance, take a chance, understand me
You're dirty, sweet and you're my girl

Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on (ow)
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on (ow)
(Get it on)

Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on

Take me
For a meanwhile I'm still thinking

cars - Bolan probably just thought they were cool and sexy.

Their references to cars has to do with the fact that Marc Bolan always thought he would die in a car crash... which he eventually did.

If you listen to the very end he says "Meanwhile I'm still thinkin" which is a line from Chuck Berry's "Little Queenie" where he says that exact thing several times.

@itsonlyroknroll Acknowledging Berry's influence on his music.

This song was named one of the top 10 Sexiest Songs in a list recently (2008). Sorry I can't remember where but it was on the Internet. Anyway, this song does rock -- and roll -- see my comments under my screen name "coolin_baby" for Telegram Sam, another T-Rex song. Good to know about origin and meaning of "the teeth of the hydra upon you" which is a memorable line of this song -- thanks songyone. And yes, Marc Bolan tragically died too young instantly in a car crash two weeks before his 30th birthday and he wasn't the driver. It is documented that he had a premonition and fear that he would die in a car accident. Whether that is what drove him to write so many songs with cars in the lyrics is unknown.

The obvious is obvious but I'm suprised that this song doesn't have more comments. We get it. But wtf is bang a gong? OH BOY WHAT A SONG

maybe gong means a reject… like the gong show… if you get “gonged” you’re out, no good… he’s saying take one for the team … so what if she’s skinny, waddles around, the size of a car, dirty, etc. … ya boy needs you…

I first started trying to explore the meaning behind these lyrics because they are quoted at the beginning of Longlegs, a horror movie recently released in 2024. One of the characters is sort of stuck in the 70’s and sings rock songs from the 70’s out of context making them sound very creepy. It is also the closing song of the movie during the closing credits.

This song is kinda obvious about the theme, I guess it was the only hit he had. You know this song starts off every CD Ive made. Its so cool...

@Yakuza Warlord You'd be from the US, It was his only hit there, America just didn't get him, but then Bowie broke through. He had many hits in other countries and was a major star for half a decade in his homeland
