The Broken Heart of a Traitor Lyrics
will the waves of time wash away the pain in my heart?
can i bury the knife that has pierced my soul, or will i continue to turn it to remind me of my own blindness? because i find no touch of grace to surprise my eyes, or rest my spirit.
and i have come to realize my good moments were forged in self deception...
and the question that plagues my mind...
is grace enough?
to build a bridge once burned,
to fill what is hollow with the substance of virtue.
though the wings of a dove have wiped the tears from my eyes, this tounge has fanned the flames of unforgiveness.
but love suffers long and rejoices in truth...
and this imperfect creation is shortcoming,
but striving none the less for that which is eternal.

My take on this is that he has finally reached a state of self awareness, realizing that he has committed deeds that have caused harm to himself and to other people because of the way society traps us into doing so. Though he tries to escape the memories of these deeds, he finds himself almost unable to and, though he wishes he could be rid of them, he knows that nothing will every take the memories away. He thinks that WANTING to do good and DOING good are two completely different things. . .and though he felt as though wanting to do the right things was good enough in the past, he is starting to doubt it will ever be good enough to himself anymore because of things that he has seen/experienced. He thinks perhaps that trying todo good might be futile and though he has seen that he must try, he still knows that the traps of society once had him in their grasps and he does not know if his attempts at grace will be good enough to help spark the realization of what is right and what is wrong in other people because they have been blinded by these things for so long, due to one reason or another. He feels that though he might be flawed, he is still striving to find the truth and beauty in the things he knows because the memory of something beautiful stays with him forever.
my favorite .hopesfall. song.. actually probably my all time favorite song as well.. simply beautiful and the passion that Doug, as well as Ryan, put into this song just takes my breath away.. and it fits every mood.. depressed, happy, angry, etc. I can listen to this song with every mood I'm in.. I can't say that about a lot of songs.
it seems like he means that he can't look past his shortcomings and he has trouble forgiving himself, so he doesnt think that God has the grace to forgive him. the part about the doves wings wiping away his tears though, shows that he has recieved grace before and he knows its there, he just doesn't think he deserves forgiveness since he has been so unforgiving..........
I always told myself... 'If you wanna hear someone that sounds real upset, listen to this song.' The singer pours his heart out on this song. Excellent song.
for one thing, unforgiveness is not a word. second, it does not fit the lyrics, nor does the word sound like "unforgiveness." the word is "transgression," listen to the song, you'll hear it. transgression, look it up, it fits the song better than the ficticious "unforgiveness" But as for the song, the meaning seems pretty clear: He has done something he regrets, and as some might understand, regret can be damn painful...especially if you cant forgive youself for it. "though the wings of a dove have wiped the tears from my eyes, this tounge has fanned the flames of transgression." although I have been forgiven, I have sinned, and burned my bridges. "Is grace enough?" Good question Does forgiveness really mend the damage done?
Either that or the song is about trying to find "the eternal"
Nevertheless this is one of my all time favorite songs. Top ten without a doubt.
One of the most beautifully melodic bands' most beautifully written songs.
The writer has been spurned by either a friend or a lover, and is questioning why god would allow him to feel so much pain. He wonders if time or he himself will ever dull the pain he feels from this, perhaps happening before many times in his life.
He questions if god even loves him or the world because he can't remember the last time he'd been moved so much in awe or happiness, as he has been in pain and suffering. And he wonders if his faith is even enough to give him the strength to keep above water. To fix his broken relationships, or even the emptiness he feels inside because of it.
Though he is of faith, and has felt god help him through past pain, he wonders if it's just possible for the pain to stop. He knows his part in what has hurt him, but just wishes the situation wouldn't occur in the first place and he could be eternally happy. But he knows that everyone suffers the same in their own path to the eternal, and on with this knowledge, he can only have faith and press on until his death, as that is his test.
the lyrics in this expresses so beautifully how the world is slowly falling more and more into its pit of heartbreaks and backstabs... the imperfect creation is us.
what a wonderful, heartfelt song!
