It makes sense that it should happen this way
That the sky should break and the earth should shake
As if to say, sure it all matters but in such an unimportant way
As if to say, hey, hey
Fly away, sweet bird of prey
Fly, fly away, nothing can stand in your way
Sweet bird, if you knew the words
I know that you'd say, fly, fly away
In makes sense that it should hurt in this way
That my heart should break and my hands should shake
As if to say, sure it don't matter except in the most important way
As if to say, hey, hey
Fly away, sweet bird of prey
Fly, fly away, I won't stand in your way
Sweet bird, if you knew the words
I know that you'd say, fly, fly away
In makes sense that it should feel just this way
That you slowly fade and yet still remain
As if to say, everything matters in such an invisible way
As if to say, it's okay, fly away
{Bye, bye, goodbye I'm back
Am I gonna get sued for saying that?
Call me later, see ya, I love you, bye
I'm gone, okay}
That the sky should break and the earth should shake
As if to say, sure it all matters but in such an unimportant way
As if to say, hey, hey
Fly, fly away, nothing can stand in your way
Sweet bird, if you knew the words
I know that you'd say, fly, fly away
That my heart should break and my hands should shake
As if to say, sure it don't matter except in the most important way
As if to say, hey, hey
Fly, fly away, I won't stand in your way
Sweet bird, if you knew the words
I know that you'd say, fly, fly away
That you slowly fade and yet still remain
As if to say, everything matters in such an invisible way
As if to say, it's okay, fly away
Am I gonna get sued for saying that?
Call me later, see ya, I love you, bye
I'm gone, okay}

I think this song is about loss. Either the death of a loved one or the death of a realtionship.
amazing song. definitely a divergance from her normal songs about sex
I think it's about how someone has lost a love and it feels like the world is ending but there are so more important things going on in the world that the person feels guilty for being wrapped up in her broken heart. She's trying to act like it doesn't matter but it's the most important thing to her. The contact with the love is fading but the memories remain the same. It sounds like she trying to tell herself it's ok to let go and having trouble doing so.
this song hit me on a personal level. I broke up with my boyfriend and then he ended up on his deathbed months later from not taking care of himself....but he came out of it with brain damage; rendered himself into the state of almost an infant and has to be fed by people in a nursing home. I was with someone new when my old bf of more than a decade fell ill. You never stop loving someone even when they get sick, die, or if you move on to someone new. But the someone new does not always have the strength to be understanding of the grief. This song reminds me of how when you lose someone, after a while you realize you aren't thinking of them 24/7 like you used to....OR you are having difficulty even remembering what their face looked like or what their voice sounded like...things you thought you'd NEVER forget.
Funeral home is only letting us play two songs, so if both my uncle and mother don't pick a song to play, I'm going to try to get this to play at my grandmother's funeral. The "bird of prey" part doesn't make much of a difference when the rest of the song seems so right.
A sad song.
What I get out of this song is that she is pregnant and losing the baby. The lyrics "It makes sense that it should hurt in this way That my heart should break, and my hands should shake As if to say: Sure it don't matter except in the most important way As if to say:
Fly away, sweet bird of prey Fly fly away I won't stand in your way Sweet bird, if you knew the words I know that you'd say: fly, fly away
It makes sense that it should feel just this way That you slowly fade and yet still remain As if to say: Everything matter in such an invisible way As if to say: It's O.K. Fly... away.... What do ya'll think?
I think this song is about someone who used to be strong in her eyes (bird of prey) who is dying from an illness (you slowly fade, yet still remain). It grapples with the feelings of sadness and loss, even while this person is still alive but greatly diminished. In the final verse, she has come to grips with the inevitable end and is telling this person that they don't need to keep hanging on for her sake and they can let go (as if to say, it's okay. Fly away.).
