The Mob Rules Lyrics

Oh...Come on!
Close the city and tell the people that something's coming to call
Death and darkness are rushing forward to take a bite from the wall, oh

You've nothing to say
They're breaking away
If you listen to fools
The mob rules
The mob rules...

Kill the spirit and you'll be blinded, the end is always the same
Play with fire, you burn your fingers and lose your hold of the flame, oh

It's over it's done
The end, the big death
If you listen to fools
The mob rules...

You've nothing to say
Oh they're breaking away
If you listen to fools

Break the circle and stop the movement, the wheel is thrown to the ground
Just remember it might stop rolling and take you right back around

You're all fools, fools rules rules
The mob rules

Doubtful, since mobs are generally very unstructured units. It seems to me like it's about how people ignore their individuality and their own personal beliefs when they're in a mob, and how people will just join mobs whenever one shows up regardless of what that mob is going to do. A "mob mentality", if you will.

@LordRetard No need to live up to your screen name. Rules can exist for a short while, ones that are quite devastating. That's a long substantiated rule.

The song refers to the ignorant people who believe that structures like the government rules. Its the mob that rules. All of the lyrics leading up to the main line are the words of those who believe the government rules but then Dio proclaims "If you listen to fools. The mob rules." This is very true considering under many type of government its is the people(the mob, majority) that really controls everything. Unfortunatley most people take it as if one actually listens to fools the mob will rule when the mob is actually already in power.

(The song is about the crucifixion and death of Christ)

Close the city and tell the people that something's coming to call Death and darkness are rushing forward to take a bite from the wall, oh

You've nothing to say They're breaking away If you listen to fools The mob rules The mob rules...

(Christ said nothing to Pilate as he was condemned. "They'll drag you away" is the actual lyric here. The Mob chose Barabbas over Jesus Christ, the Mob ruled in this case.)

Kill the spirit and you'll be blinded, the end is always the same Play...

Great music, but I dislike the loser lyrics.

People who feel powerless wished mobs ruled, cause, as part of a mob, they could have some power.

But the mob does not rule. A mob can certainly do some damage if people gets out of control, but most of the time the people are under control. And being under control is what people really dislike...so they have escapist music, movies, etc.

This dislike of being controlled at the very core of rock, metal, rap, punk, etc. It's all about sticking it to the man. And what better way than a mob!

That's a good notice.

I agree, movies/art/music... rock n'roll power is used to disorientate people from take control of their lifes and their communities.

And how it using the rock n' roll power? Simple.. by focusing to the image-style-idol part of it.

Of course some genre of music..seems to be semi-controlled. Thanx to the net, uncontrolled..til now!

The music band, we talking about, belong to this genre. First, because it is a band which came from the 70s music tornado, second, because it sell -good for the companies-, til today.

what?...30 years after... we hear..the mob...

I believe the lyrics are a clever way of saying that those who remain silent, do nothing, are not proactive, or do not think for themselves, are subject to the outcome of the beliefs of the status quo. In this case the status quo ('fools') have already doomed themselves to the 'death and darkness' approaching the 'wall' of the 'city'. If 'you've nothing to say' and don't react to the situation then the walls will be 'breaking away'. Those that 'kill the spirit' of responding properly to the situation because confrontation is involved ('you burn your fingers') have given up without a fight ('it's over, it's done'). If you 'break the circle and stop the movement' (the doomed belief) then there is a chance of defeating the problem at hand. 'It might start rolling and take you right back around' if you are not constantly on guard against and vigilant to the beliefs of the status quo.

Song Meaning

The song is explaining the adverse effects of democracy or the majority ruling and making decisions based on their desires instead of the idea that "rights" are not susceptible to the voting process or authority of large groups for the sake of having a large group. The individual is being warned not to become part of the "mob" because "you'll have nothing to say" and "they're breaking away" meaning the mob is taking over and your rights will begin to be taken away, bit by bit. By the end of the song, the person who has joined the mob, is once again warned that the same thing they are doing to others, can and will more than likely happen to them. By voting, let's say, you've taken away the rights of others and eventually that same thing is going to happen to you "Just remember it might start rolling and take you right back around", meaning the things you want to protect will one day be up for grabs by the majority/mob rules who you helped give power to taking those very things you love or want to protect, away. .

In the liner notes to the 2003 compilation Stand Up And And Shout: The Anthology, Ronnie James Dio had this to say:

“We wrote this song for the motion picture Heavy Metal, a groundbreaking animated film. I was the only one in the band to see a prototype of the film, and I got it instantly. They wanted a song for a sequence where these people living behind a walled city are about to be attacked by barbarians. It was real science fiction, which I love, and the characters had horns coming out of their heads and all this evil imagery, so I came up with the title “The Mob Rules,” and Tony and I wrote the song. We recorded it in a house in Ascot, England, owned by Ringo Starr at the time. There was a studio in the basement. We spent three days there. It was an awesome experience, and the song turned out to be a blockbuster for us.”

It is about certain rules that mobs make up for their members

This was a great song for the animated film "Heavy Metal". While not one of the "deepest" songs ever done by Sabbath, it is a very cool song nevertheless.
