Owen Meaney Lyrics

Uncertainty- A foundation built on nothing I could see
secure in your immaculate perception
the last resort I thought I'd ever exercise
Now, all that I have to stand on
Grieving from a different point of view
I learned it's meaning from you
in life and death and continue...

but faith is just a silent tribute;
Mine is just a desperate act
Give him back

I owe him, throw me a line, I'll suspend my disbelief
and concede following your lead faithfully
Led into this concession with hope and doubt
A seemingly futile gesture

Faith is just a silent tribute
Mine is just a desperate act
Holding on
It's just this desperation that takes me home

The book is called a prayer for owen meany Tekim. This song and goodbye sky harbour by Jimmy Eat World are both about his REALLY REALLY GOOD BOOK. and both songs REALLY REALLY GOOD SONGS.

Alright. This is sad, but somehow, even after more than a hundred comments, some of you don't believe that this story is about a book. But it is. Those are direct quotes.

Don't say it's "up to interpretation," or that it's just about leaving an airport, or that it's about suicide. It isn't. Read the book. There's no denying this.

Besides, it's a great book.

I'm thinking that this is supposed to be from the narrotor's perspective, as he is the one left behind at the end of the novel, and his faith is indeed a tribute to Owen...any thoughts?

although the title is "meaney", this song is about the BOOK by john irving which is called " OWEN MEANY". the story tells the tragically relationship of two boys growing up in a small town in the 50´s. owen, a little boy but with very impressive self esteem, is convinced to know the date of his death. the only thing keeping him going his way is his BELIEF. for him everything is destined to happen, nothing happens without a cause and he always knows what will happen. one of the cruelest moments is, when owen kills john´s mother with a baseball. READ THIS BOOK !!! IT`S "OWESOME" thanx to lagwagon for doing this song, maybe i´ll write another song about the book, lol.

The song is about "A prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving. Joey managed to translate the suffering personage of the book into a very good song, wich has much emotions in it...

while someone could take this song at face value, and be like yeah, it's about the book-- maybe it expounds on some of the book's themes you know?.. i know that's pretty close to being about the book, but i think he goes further with it and makes a statement about everyone's individual relationship with faith. you know.. how some people only really decide to go out and seek god after a loss-- and their faith is more of a sign of desperation, in order to try to recapture what it was they lost, than it is actual faith which is supposed to be a relationship with god that is independent of need. i see a lot of this theme throughout the entire song.

The quotes are from the book but this song is not about the book. I think joey cape is using the books concept and turning it into a song that relates to his own beliefs and personal experiences

I'm a huge fan of the band, and more personally of Joey. And so I read the book and I thought it was just perfect. I was going to write a huge explanation on this, but then again... you just need to read the book and see it by yourself. I came to the conclusion that there might be a parallelism between Owen and Derrick Plourde... This I think 'cause I know Derrick was a big influence on all his friends, not just Joe. Same thing with Owen... really people, you have to read the book, it makes you remember of your faith if you had forgotten about it as I did.

  • Note: something I read on a webpage dedicated to Derrick, is that he used to be (apart from a great musician and writer) a great carpenter... which is Jesus's trade.

@ vicolina I find the idea of a parallelism between Owen and Derrick Plourde an interesting thought - and the way you explain it, I can definitely see where you're coming from -, but the song was released in 1998, some seven years before Derrick committed suicide. Still, I wonder what singing this song may have felt like to Joey Cape after 2005.

At the time (of the album release), Joey talked about the song (and the lyrics on the album in general) in an interview he gave to the French magazine 'Rock Sound'. I don't have my copy of it anymore, and...

I haven't read the book (yet) - as far as the lyrics go, [edit: here's the book I've ended up writing about them LOL]
