Goodbye Sober Day Lyrics
Your lips say one thing
But the drugs say another
How can I massage
This inter-galactic ulcer?
Goodbye sober day
Hello milky way...
Pin my ear to the wisdom post
Hang me up and drain me dry
Mend my shipwrecked spirit
Lift the veil from my eyes
Goodbye sober day
The years grew wings and flew away
Ghosts of the past become barbarians
Of the future...
And I still pity you
Because what you said was true
Goodbye sober day
Hello milky way...
May your sun be blown out like a candle
May your sea burn like tar
May your sky be rolled up like a scroll
May your blue moon drip with blood
What would they say
If you went up in smoke?
If I dug you up
And made soup of your bones?
Goodbye sober day
But the drugs say another
How can I massage
This inter-galactic ulcer?
Goodbye sober day
Hello milky way...
Pin my ear to the wisdom post
Hang me up and drain me dry
Mend my shipwrecked spirit
Lift the veil from my eyes
Goodbye sober day
The years grew wings and flew away
Ghosts of the past become barbarians
Of the future...
And I still pity you
Because what you said was true
Goodbye sober day
Hello milky way...
May your sun be blown out like a candle
May your sea burn like tar
May your sky be rolled up like a scroll
May your blue moon drip with blood
What would they say
If you went up in smoke?
If I dug you up
And made soup of your bones?
Goodbye sober day

The post by "Elimination" is totally absurd. For starters, the pretentious attitude towards "avant-garde" as a genre and as "art" is not only annoyingly elitist but also completely wrong (for example the implication that as "art" music should not bother telling stories or even writing cohesive lyrics).
Furthermore, the suggestion that, because Patton is clever enough to use his vocals as a unique and highly variable instrument, his lyrics are meaningless is absurd and disrespectful towards Patton himself. Of course the lyrics have meaning. Simply by using English words they songs have meaning; if Patton wanted to avoid meaning he would doubtless use wordless vocals, which in fact he does quite often. And I can't imagine Patton would come up with such clever poetry with no regard to the meaning of what he is saying.
I can't even begin to finish my argument, what you say is so fucking..... silly!
Seriously, just read your comment, you sould like such a pretentious asshole it's almost funny.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Maybe not relevant to the meaning of the song as a whole, but the whole "chakchakchakchaka!" bit at the end is borrowed from an indonesian chant called "ketjack", which also was used in the movie Blood Simple. You can actually hear it here: http://www.ubu.com/ethno/soundings/ketjack.html
"I think that too many people think too much about my lyrics. I am more a person who works with the sound of a word than with its meaning. Often I just choose the words because of the rhythm not because of the meaning"-Mike Patton
I took some acid last weekend, and now I understand this song, which I had previously taken for kick-arse gibber-jabber. I think it's aboout using drugs as a tool for self healing. He is very poetically telling his demons to get fucked!
I <3 you.
I <3 you.
I think it's about death; Dieing after years of unfortunate mishappenings. These years, as in life, being pure and simple, yet deep down full of sadness and corruption/disassemblement. P.S. Mike Patton is God.
Another crazy patton song,
Mike good sir, I salute you
I think this song is about doing drugs.
how can you have crooning, lounge, death metal, Indian chants all in one song and yet be seemless? Only in a Patton induced Bungle world that is!!!
In in response to necrophage:
An even higher artform is doing this while simultaneously incorporating meaning into those lyrics, something Elimination is suggesting Patton does not, and you apparently agree with.
In fact, you imply it is somehow less of an artform if truly instrumentational lyrics DO have meaning, which is silly.
If anything, it's harder to both have serious meaning and to write lyrics primarily as music. If it can be done successfully it is all the more impressive.
You guys are deriding half of Patton's incredible ability in order to fit his music to your silly, pretentious, and ulitmately immature ideas about "art."
I think it's a about an old relationship, one ruined by drugs
