The Garden Lyrics
And he was walking in the garden,
And he was walking in the night,
And he was singing a sad love song,
And he was praying for his life.
And the stars came out around him.
He was thinking of his sins.
And he's looking at his song-bird,
And he's looking at his wings.
There, inside the garden,
Came another. With his lips,
Said, "Won't you come and be my lover?
Let me give you a little kiss."
And he came, knelt down before him,
And fell upon his knees,
"I will give you gold and mountains
If you stay awhile with me."
And there was trouble taking place.
Trouble taking place
There, inside the garden,
They kissed, and the sun rose.
And he walked a little further,
And he found he was alone.
And the wind, it gathered 'round him.
He was thinking of his sins.
And he's looking for his song-bird,
He was looking for his wings.
And there was trouble taking place.
Trouble taking place

the song is about a couple of angels who fall in love with each other, the garden is obviously heaven and their love is the sin represented by 'the golden mountains', their sins are carried with them, the 'trouble taking place' is the punishment, since angles live a life of survitude and adoration, not for thinds such as love. the song beard is God who watches.
In the end Miss Harvey says "Looking FOR his songbird/Looking FOR his wings" Not "at". It seems minor, but I think it makes a big difference. Since this affair, the songbird and his wings have disappeared. I can't say much about the songbird, but the wings certainly represent innocence or at least being an angel. After what happened, he lost his wings and became a fallen angel of sorts. He sacrificed it all for such a sinful desire, but he was deceived and left with nothing but a fall from grace.
This song is obviously about two men...one of them desparately wants somebody, anybody. Another comes to him, they kiss, and he's gone the next morning. It's about the desparate one being taken advantage of 'cause it says "I will give you gold and mountains if you stay a while with me" and "they kissed and the sun rose, he walked a little further, and he found he was alone." He was taken advantage of and ended up worse off than at the beginning of the song. It's a great song and very meaningful to me.
hmm sins? garden? veryy religious sounding to me. something forbidden.
This seems like a creative retelling of Jesus' position in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus reflecting on his life, beseeching to save his life and encountering a dangerous and beguiling situation.
@cgnjny Yes! I totally agree, brings very much to mind Judas and Jesus in the garden.

Has NO ONE considered the Biblical reference to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden? Original Sin, Fall from grace, Paradise Lost... they're all very basic religious motifs, and this album is full of literary references. This was one that was very clear to me. cgnjny, I liked the idea of Jesus' last night in Gethsemane, but he had no sins to think of. He was perfect. The idea of passion, lust, sin and loss of innocence seem to point clearly to a very intriguing (and more poetic than Biblically accurate) interpretation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Another of the literary references I've noticed in this album, along with "A Perfect Day Elise" "The Wind" "Angelene" "Catherine", etc.
Er. Adam and Eve? Listen to the lyrics again, it's referring to two men.

Been listening to this album since it came out. Not sure why it never occurred to me before today, but this is obviously based on the story of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane with Satan. Certainly the meaning is open to interpretation, but that’s got to be the archetype for this song.
