My first name Angelene
Prettiest mess you've ever seen
Love for money is my sin
Any man calls, I'll let him in
Rose is my color, and white
Pretty mouth and green my eyes
I see men come and go

But there'll be one who will collect my soul and come to me
Two-thousand miles away
He walks upon the coast
Two-thousand miles away
It lays open like a road
Dear God, life ain't kind
People getting born and dying
But I've heard there's joy untold
Lays on that open road in front of me
My first name is Angelene

this song just touches my soul for some reason. I think this is PJ Harvey's voice at it's best. I love the way she sings this. It just moves me and I don't even have to relate to the subject to be moved by it. She always seems to have the best opening tracks.

Well, it kinda sucks if you notice your favourite song is about a hooker. anyway, the music is incredible. as is the whole album...

Angelene, the story of a young girl who was once tenderly loved and hoping another will again. Sonically beautiful, lyrically tragic, great for depressing alcoholic nights in.

Has no one considered Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter"? A number of her songs on this album have literary references, and I wouldn't be surprised if they ALL do and they're just more vague than the handful I've recognized. The Scarlet Letter was "A" for Adultery, associated with prostitution (or at least a similar act), etc, and the character's name here is Angelene. The character's name in the book is not Angelene, but the letter A appears throughout the book in different places, at one point initially (and incorrectly) interpreted by some of the characters to stand for "Angel" but the theme of adultery and the color red appear throughout the book. This is the first of quite a handful of literary references in this album.

adding to what foreignwords said, the lines "rose is my color and white/ pretty mouth and green my eyes" is taken directly from a short story by salinger called "pretty mouth and green my eyes" about a guy whose wife is very much like angelene. he loves her though he cannot trust her.

i think its about a girl who thinks love is bought with money, but yet still thinks that someday her prince charming will come rescue her, and then she'll give him her soul instead of just her bootie.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
