Not Original

I believe this song to be about looking into one's self to find one's true core. Pretending to be fully present & alive in life & actually being so are two different things. This to me is about learning not to deceive others with what you present them with, the same old lies will get you nowhere. Becoming the original, authentic 'you' is what will help to better define who you really are in the eyes of others.

I think this song is a call out to all generic metal bands (specifically metal bands, because other popular genres don't write lyrics like this) for writing boring, same-y, inflammatory lyrics that say nothing. It's calling them all fakers and telling them everyone will find out eventually. I could go line by line, but I'll just choose the ones that best explain this.

"I sorta like deceiving, and all this tragic loss" They're all vultures, doing whatever they can to grab some fame, even capitalizing on the deaths of celebrities or tragedies covered in the media.

"I want to drown in praise, but never really deliver" They want to be adored by fans, but never put forth the effort to make something new, something real, take a chance on something that's not popular in the pursuit of artistic expression.

"So long to go, you know" The bands are trying to excuse their actions, saying that they've got a long career and they're either using those generic songs to get traction or as filler for their albums instead of trying harder.

"And when the well is dead and dry, I'll keep begging you to start a war." So many songs now are about starting revolution, fighting oppression or being violent in general. This calls that out, saying they're all beating a dead horse in the hopes they can still make money on it.

"One by one they fall" The bands aren't going to last "Use your words for war" Again, songs about revolution, starting shit that doesn't need to be started, inflaming violence. "Chasing open doors" Looking for song fodder, anything they can latch on. "For what it's worth" They're only in it for the money.

Clint said in an interview with Bloody-Disgusting.com that he was inspired by Stranger Things to write lyric of this song. Now i can see that its related to that weird character in the show :)
