I think this song is about a new relationship and getting to know someone.
It reminds me of my most recent almost relationship; in fact CAS was perhaps "our" band. He once sent me this song, and it made so much sense to me as the main word to describe what I fell for him back then as "affection".
The beginning of the end was on the night one of us drank too much and said things they shouldn't have. Still, the affection was there and will probably always be. It's a shame, I was constantly thinking of him and could have maybe fallen for him. Just one more of those relationships you will always wonder "what if?"...

Another CAS song with brilliant lyrics and no comments. Hurrrumph. This little beauty is a whimsical what if comparison of actions versus perception. Will I be my worst or best for you? Will you accept both the positive and the negative as facets of my love? Will you reach for me and what happens if you do? To me, he is laying bare his soul, showing his true nature, in that no matter what he does/says, he feels, at least, that it is all done/said in love.
Made an account just to point out that this song is very clearly about abuse. I was looking up the lyrics because it was ringing true for something I just experienced. Abuse starts subtle. It's quiet and it seems forgiveable, until it keeps happening. I'm sorry but these lyrics are screaming that one or both of these people in this relationship have no healthy idea of how to be with another person:

Anyone trying to sell you this narrative has serious boundary issues, and is focused on their needs, and not on the reality of two people together.
