Pieces Lyrics

You and me got ourselves a problem
I can see this better than I solve 'em
I believe I found a way around it
I will leave this better than I found it

There's too much smoke to see it
There's too much broke to feel this
I love you, I love you
And all of your pieces

There's too much smoke to see it
There's too much broke to feel this
I love you, I love you
And all of your pieces

History's a letter made of scarlet
Victories look better when you've called it
Misery's the moment when I lost you
It's pleasure in a costume
It's more than what it cost you

There's too much smoke to see it
There's too much broke to feel this
I love you, I love you
And all of your pieces

There's too much smoke to see it
There's too much broke to feel this
I love you, I love you
And all of your pieces

All of your pieces
All of your pieces
All of your pieces
All of your pieces
All of your pieces
All of your pieces

There's too much smoke to see it
There's too much broke to feel this
I love you, I love you
And all of your pieces

There's too much smoke to see it
There's too much broke to feel this
I love you, I love you
And all of your pieces

Initially, I thought this song was about him calling it off with someone but still loving them, even if it broke the other person. Reading the actual lyrics, I think it's more of a song about someone he loves, who is very insecure due to something in their past, and that clouds their judgment of themselves. They can't see that they are worth love, and being broken from that past, they don't feel that they are and can be loved ("too much smoke to see it," "too much broke to feel this"). He just wants this other person to know that he loves them no matter those insecurities brought on by the past.

My Interpretation

I think you are right.

@hobbitpop i think youre right, currently there is a girl that recently broke up with her ex, she really likes me and, she knows i like her, but she doesnt feel like she is worth love, im still trying to convince her otherwise, and other are telling her it dont exist

I think this song is about a relationship where two person have said and done too much to hurt the other.. and then one of them finally gave up and decided to just let go thinking that they would be better off... but then when he/she finally did he was able to look at their relationship in a new light, realizing that living without the other person is much more miserable... figuring out that he love the other person.. all of her, even the things he hates about her its just that so many hurtful things have come between them and thats whats keeping him from seeing this before, thus the line too much smoke to see it, too much broke to feel this, but i love you, i love you, with all of your pieces... but now he finally did realize and now he wants her to realize this aswell..

My Interpretation

@thelyricsgal This is how I view the lyric meaning of this song as well.

@thelyricsgal both these comments are right im currently living this song, a girl that i once liked came back after a year later, i tried not falling for her, but i did and hard and i told her that i loved her, but from what i understand she recently broke up with her ex, and her selfsteam was really low and thought that i would loose intress in her, so instead of texting we played songs to each other, but the problem is all of my friends now dislike me, because they dont believe i fell in love with her,...

  • History's a letter made of scarlet- his is a reference to the term in literature ("Scarlet Letter"). Someone with a scarlet letter means someone who committed aldutery or cheated. So basically, the history of their relationship isn't totally pure.

  • I believe this line is his way of saying he prefers to surrender (it's inferred to be out of love based on the rest of the song), which explains why she looks better "calling" or "claiming" victory. Essentially a humble submission in the name of love.

This line seems less ambiguous as it...

  • This line seems less ambiguous as it basically is a poetic way of saying he realized once he "lost" her, that the misery he felt in the relationship couldn't compare with the misery of it ending. In other worss, the whatever pain he feels with her is incomparable to the pain or misery he feels without her.

  • This line simply follows up the third by saying that although breaking up may look like relief, it's simply a selfish desire for pleasure. He's essentially acknowledging that he recognizes the fallacy within "the grass is always greener on the other side."

  • This one to me is the toughest to understand, but I think he's talking about the price of pleasure being more than the cost of the relationship. This just reiterates that he feels strongly that love is far greater than pleasure, despite the cost of pain- and of course that in the end pleasure will end up costing more because it leavs you without the benefits of love.

These are obviously just my interpretations, I could totally be wrong. All the same, I hope it helped!!!

  • @jen476mn @sarkkus I love your break down of that verse! It is perfect! Thanks for taking the time to respond!!

@jen476mn Thank you! The time spent is worth it considering how much I genuinely love this song (and Andrew Belle). What's your favorite song in the whole album (it's between "Dark Matter" and this song for me)?

She was rejected by him, and he regrets not seeing what he had and not being able to accept her. He sees how it’s only added to her not seeing any value in herself. Maybe he put her on a pedestal and thought love had to be this pure, unadulterated thing, but he realizes that what makes someone beautiful is how all the ugly parts have shaped them. It makes a person more willing to accept others faults and to offer compassion to others. He realizes that the fantasy doesn’t exist, and it would be boring anyways. How could someone who really was perfect accept him? He was fooling himself to think he was any better and what is better? He thought he’d won by moving on, and he tried to convince everyone around him that he’s better off, but he’s not. He regrets losing her, and it hurts him more because he’s the one that did it. His loss is worse because he thinks about what could’ve been while she can more easily move on because he didn’t want her. Maybe he sees that it cost him before because she can find someone less complicated and find happiness elsewhere more easily than he can. He’s not nearly as happy as he wants to appear, and he may never be able to undo what he did. He thinks he’s figured out how to change the situation, but there’s no way to know if he can fix it. It may also be hard to explain to the people around him if he made a bunch of disparaging comments about her.
