This is an actual quote from Trevor to Decibel Magazine, where he explained each on the tracks on Everblack.
This second song is a real blast heavy tune… fast paced and very melodic. In my mind this is a quintessential Brian Eschbach penned BDM song—nice powered wig (read: classically-influenced) riffage and an ultra-catchy chorus to boot. Lyrically, it deals with the origins of the goat as a symbol of evil and how the lamb came to represent the Christian… the goat of departure was cast out into the desert bearing the sins of man on his back… he was the original scapegoat. It talks about the beginning of the ‘horns’ hand sign that we metal heads know and love… the emblem of our very pride and joy.
The Goat of Departure was a Jewish ritual, a sacrifice for the fallen Angel Azazel. This old Jewish myth became the holiest holiday for all Jews known as Yom Kippur which is a day of atoning for all of mans sins committed before God. The Goat of Departure is where the meaning and saying scapegoat came from. Symbolically they place blame of mans sins on Azazel for showing mankind how to make weapons, armor, warfare in general, the arts, jewelry, makeup, etc. I was just bored looking up things about the Book of Enoch and it mentions Azazel. So I was looking up the Jewish myth of Azazel. Ive heard the name a thousands times and its often linked with Lucifer. I would assume that Azazel would of been Lucifers general of sorts. I always prefered Egyptian, Sumerian, Babylonian, Greek, Roman and Scandinavian mythology over Abrahamic myths. As soon as I read the phrase Goat of Departure I was like oh shit thats a Black Dahlia Murder song. I always knew it as a kick ass song of theres, one of the best on that Album in fact. Trevors lyrics are pretty poetic and have deep symbolic meanings. He really has a gift for writing, Im surprised he hasnt written a novel yet. Id fucking buy it!
