Voices Lyrics

Who am I, is this me?
Am I one or thirteen?
I've gone cold, hard to deal
Used to stand where I kneel

Everybody listen
Voices in my head
Everybody listen
Does yours say what mine says?

I want more, than I need
I don't know what is real

Everybody listen
Voices in my head
Everybody listen
Does yours say what mine says?
Anytime I listen
Voices in my head
Everybody listen
Does yours say what mine says?

Whispering of names, faces
Uniforms I've worn
And all that is gone
Always climbing
To fall down again
Holding onto everything
It's not what it seems

I've been told dreaming's free
Think I'll go back to sleep

Everybody listen
Voices in my head
Everybody listen
Does yours say what mine says?
Anytime I listen
Voices in my head
Everybody listen
Does yours say what mine says?

Calling out the names, faces
Uniforms I've worn
And all that is gone
Always climbing
To fall down again
Holding onto everything
It's not what it seems

I feel like this song is about the band's past and the different things they've gone through like the different albums, the deaths of Layne Staley and Mike Starr to drug-related circumstances, and the move from Seattle to Los Angeles. Also getting something the echoes of PTSD.

Fun fact: In the music, there is a window with a picture on the edge and it looks like in the frame there is a picture of Layne.

I think it is about how humans work - we have parts of ourself, and some of that have it more distinct for many reasons (usually trauma). We also change over time, have influences from being raised, different jobs or roles, locations, languages which can also influence thought in different ways. And I think this is Jerry literally hearing those parts and memories of himself. Perhaps a bit of identity confusion as part of that. Perhaps also thinking he is a bit nuts and this could be a hot topic, but he seems to know others are like this too - what is that like for them? Sometimes those parts of us can be exiled, asleep or locked away too.

I feel this is a song about innocence. Am I 1 or 13? It doesn’t matter, thoughts are thoughts. Innocent most definitely and not corrupted the younger you are and less vulnerable to create complication in simple thought. Used to stand where I kneel? Shouldn’t it be the other way around. You would think your thoughts would become clearer as you age but wait, I’m kneeling where I used to stand? WTF. Why did this happen? Creating a false identity to get by with different names and faces worn to achieve something. But what? Just to fall down. To hold on to everything. What is everything? Seems like nothing if it all breaks so easy. The voices in your head will never lie. They are your pure self. Some sortof ESP or higher conscience of connecting people to what they are really feeling without having to complicate it with BS.
