The Island Lyrics

There's a world outside but I can't really make it
There's a life to lead but I can't exactly fake it
Yet the mood feels right
But my island is sinking out of sight

I made jetties so they'd catch all the sediment
Removed the rocks and every impediment
But the tide's rising high to wash away my island in the night

The sheltering sky was to be my everlasting lullaby
They said that islands were solid as bedrock
Standing firm forevermore
But over time even basement wastes away to the unrelenting shore

There's a lonely seed waiting to be planted
I've instructions but desire is wholly absent
I'm just a petrel in the storm
My island can't protect me anymore

I don't understand how some people think songs like these are literal. He's not talking about actual floods or islands, but rather what's in your head.

The island is your conglomeration of beliefs that you hold to and stand firm in. But as time goes on you see that what you have clung to is perhaps based on fallacies, discrepancies, or not based in reality.

But the last stanza says that there is that lonely seed, which is a brand new island that is going to be the real fortitude that lasts. Kind of like baby teeth, you cling to your first set of teeth for awhile but they slip away until something more permanent and reliable/mature comes in. Stupid analogy, I know. But it works.

Then again, due to the semi-pessimistic mood of the song, he just dismisses the seed because he has no desire. Eh punks will be punks.

I don't understand how some brainiac think this songs cannot be literal, you dont have to be a rocket genius to interpret this..most br song tends to be metaphoric, i know that, but it doesnt mean we can't interpret it based on our own views and experiences and at least for me,it hit the righ spot.

@stayfluffy i totally agree and i like the way you put it. i think, also, the dismissal of the seed is more significant than a pessimistic throwaway.

the seed is infinite potential, everything is ahead of its time and it represents much more than itself, yet to come. but greg is an aging gardener, and he's getting weary of reinventing himself. some time before, he made what was going to be his final attempt, and even now he can see what remains of his work, but it didn't last. life has caught up with him again, and he's accepted that he'll...

I think this song addresses the timely issues of global flooding evident during the recent years up to the present resulting from earth's changing climate. No one can deny the impact of the rising sea level not only to low lying and coastal areas in the 3rd world but to metropolitan cities like the recent New York floodings. This song is in the vein of 93's Modern Day Catastropist in terms of its message that unless humanity will do nothing,we are all vulnerable and helpless to this impending natural forces.

I don't think this song is about floods as Quiroga said, For me this song talks about how some people just created their own world their "island", even though they think they've built a solid and reliable island for themselves, the tides can always wash away and destroy what you've built. Somewhat like that.

well, who says that I cant interpret this literally, atleast I've alluded it to my own perspective and it hit the spot right.yours might be legit, but vague.as we all know some br songs have double meanings,so it really boils down on how you perceive it..

I can agree with AlanMarley and stayfluffy. The island is a metaphor for how change is coming to wash away your beliefs that you have in your mind and you can't protect yourself anymore from your fears.
