Default Lyrics

It slipped my mind
And for a time
I felt completely free

A world of trouble
Silent double
A pawn unto a queen

I laugh now
But later's not so easy
I've gotta stop
The will is strong but the flesh is weak
I guess that's it
I've made my bed and I lie in it

I'm still hanging on
Bird upon a wire
I fall between the waves

I avoid your gaze
I turn out of phase
A pawn unto a queen

I laugh now,
But later's not so easy
I've gotta stop
The will is strong but the flesh is weak
I guess that's it
I've made my bed and I lie in it

But it's eating me up
It's eating me up
It's eating me up (If I get free of all my snares and my nets)
It's eating me up (If I get free of all my snares and my nets)
It's eating me up (If I get free of all my snares and my nets)

The meaning is in the title. Hello!??

In fact most of people's comments are spot on, as far as general themes. Addiction, giving into one's weakness, denial of reality. And so on. We citizens of the developed nations can all relate to that. Very much so.

That is why western civilization is going to "default." Our consumerism is rampant. I just purchased a nice winter coat, on sale for 30 US dollars. I make 30 dollars sitting at a computer for 2 hours and checking email. Would I last 2 hours in a foreign sweatshop? Doubt it.

I haven't paid my student loans in forever, either. I cannot afford to because my rent is off the charts. So when the economy goes to hell, it will be my fault. Partly.

I misunderstood the line to be "I made my bed, I lied in it" which kinda got me onto the track that he's talking about an affair. Which i guess the actual lyrics don't contradict either. Could be about so much though. Like most (if not all) of Thom's songs.

@mumbles: I like that line of thought. But I believe that this is about a different type of affair.

I believe this song describes a drug addiction and I believe the lyrics help support this theory as well.

"It slipped my mind And for that time I felt completely free"

  • a first contact, one concentrates in nothing in particular (like his own issues) and therefore feels no negative energies affecting him, giving him a sense of power (and freedom)

"Oh what a troubled, Silent, poor boy A pawn into a queen "

  • realizes the addition, doesn't know how to run away from it, doesn't know how to express it and feels trapped

"I laugh now But later's not so easy I gotta stop, The will is strong, but the flesh is weak Guess that's it I've made my bed, I'm lying in it"

  • although it feels good he recognizes there will be consequences to this cycle. Feels conscious but powerless before himself and starts to give up and give in to the fact that he will have to deal with these consequences.

"I'm still hanging on But upon the way I fall between the waves"

  • on lucid(er) moments he believes there is still a way out and has faith and hope, but ends up consuming again, restarting the vicious cycle

"I avoid your gaze I turn out of phase A pawn into a queen"

  • the experiences felt and the chemical dependency constantly create a wish for repetition of consumption and trigger the fight within, again the cornered feeling while unable to make a definite decision.

"It's eating me up (if I could feel all the snails on my heads)"

  • it's eating" him up due to the physical and mental wear caused by the addiction.

the "if I could feel all the snails on my heads" part is a bit puzzling for me, but I have come to this idea: if we picture an image of the human brain, we could almost compare the brains mass with an agglomerate of snails. With this in mind we could conclude he would like to feel the neurons in his brain, which is a way of saying he wishes he was smarter so he could find a way out. He says "in my brains" because of the internal fight he has within, which gives him the feeling of having two people in his head competing for and against the desire for the drugs.

Would anyone like to give his input on my theory?

My Interpretation

I thought the same, even if with small differences ;)

Near the end of the thread someone took a picture of the lyric sheet that came with the AMOK CD.

The new song from Atoms For Peace the album is out on 2013 the song puts me in a gaze.

I think this is a song about a one who is having an affair with a married man--we get that person's perspective. The complications and guilt weighing on that person's head and not being able to resist going on with it anyway.

My Interpretation

I tend to agree, except it could also be from the married person's pov.

Right I've been listening to this song over an over all weekend and I believe it to be all about the dangers of playing games on mobile devices.

The song is hung around the central motif of the now long forgotten Nokia 6210 'default' game Snake. We have pawns and queens from online chess and a lot of laying in bed, the place where most mobile games are played. Basically the track depicts a mans path to mobile phone game dependancy.

The song deals with themes of lost time and giving into playing games on your phone- are those birds on telephone wires? a metaphor for twitter? or even angry birds the most popular mobile game around.

Think about it.

I think cell phone game dependency is a bit of a stretch. I would agree that (X) form of dependency would be on the right paths but......idk man, about the game dependency. Did you ever have a game dependency?

Yes. The more and more I think about it the more and more convinced I am that this song directly depicts my life.

Your amusing (and facetitious, I'm assuming?) interpretation would be almost convincing... except the actual lyric is "snares and my nets" not "snakes on my head".

I've been thinking about this song a lot. And this is my interpretation.

BASICS: It's about living in denial. Some of yours problem might just fade out for a moment and you think, you are ok now. You're back in "default", everything is good again. And you thing you don't have to deal with that problem. But later you realize you're lying to yourself.

DETAILED: Something what is draining you for long time slip away (there might be no obvious reason for it). You're moving to next level (pawn unto the queen). You feel good when you are with your friends, or doing something you enjoy. But later, when you're alone (or something reminds you a problem), you're starting realize the burden is still there. You've made your bed and lie in it. You're repeatedly falling down. And when you are force to face a problem (you're turn out of phase) you just trying avoid it. There's no escape, without faceing it. It's still eating you up and you wish all these snares and nets gone.

INTERST: phrase "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak" is used in history of Artificial Intelligence. Some russian scientist translate it as "the vodka is good but the meat is rotten". The first computer AI game made was checkers (game with only pawns and queens). Strange coincidence, thought.
