Our stuck together pieces
The joke is I don't need this
You can hardly tell the difference
Well I know but I don't care

Grown up together pieces
Our stuck together pieces
A load near misses
Aw shucks, you got me

You can have anything that you want
Except the thing you really want
Go back to where you came from
Go back to what you know

Our stuck together pieces
Our stuck together pieces
Our stuck together pieces
Our stuck together pieces

Why be rain when you could be sun?
Why tie yourself to anyone?
Why be here when you'd be somewhere else?
Well I know but I don't care

You don't get away, you don't get away
You don't get away, you don't get away
You don't get away, you don't get away
You don't get away, you don't get away so easily

You don't get away, you don't get away
You don't get away so easily

You don't get away, you don't get away
You don't get away, you don't get away
You don't get away

Mirror, mirror still the prettiest
To all points of the compass
Just tell us where the money is
On stuck together pieces
And a load of near misses
And a load of near misses
Well I don't want any trouble
But my brain is in a tangle

You don't get away, you don't get away
You don't get away, so easily

You don't get away, you don't get away
You don't get away so easily

You don't get away, you don't get away
You don't get away, you don't get away
You don't get away, you don't get away
You don't get away, you don't get away
You don't get away

    My Interpretation

I imagine that he means stuck together pieces literally, as in our physical bodies which are made up of many parts. He wishes to be free of his physical form and move on to something more satisfying , but this is not easily done. He may fear that he is trapped in a karma loop until he has improved himself to the point of breaking free. And although he knows he is supposed to be focusing on making progress, he doesn't care.

    My Interpretation

Stuck together pieces is about herd mentality. It's about all the different social identities we take on in various situations that dissociate us from our authentic selves, passions, desires, etc, and how strong the pressure is that keeps us bound to these constructed identities, making it extremely difficult to break free of them.

It's about the personal compromises we make to fit in, to feel like we belong. And also the things we obsess over to maintain that sense of belonging, whether it be our attractiveness, or our status, or wealth. And we gain these things, you can literally "have anything that you want, except the thing you really want", which is self-actualizion, authentic self expression, choosing to walk your own personal path regardless of what others think.

And this could be referencing any situation which you've stuck yourself to. A band, a relationship, religious/political ideology, etc.

And deep down, we know we're doing this. We know we're pretending, but we don't seem to care since we keep doing it.

I really like this song. One of my favorites on the album, along with "Before Your Very Eyes..." and "Amok". I can already tell that this is one of those albums that will get better the more you listen to it. Very often, it's the other way around. You will love an album upon purchasing and listening to it, but quickly grow sick and tired of it

    My Interpretation

The lines "grown up together pieces / our stuck together pieces" makes me think this song could be about Thom's relationship with anyone who has lived and worked alongside him for many years (ex: long-term romantic partner or bandmates).

The song may even be some sort of oblique commentary on the nature of "self" (ego/super-ego/id) and how he views himself as a broken shell of a man that has been expertly glued together so the cracks aren't immediately obvious to others ("you can hardly tell the difference / well I know, but I don't care").

Moreover - and similarly to many other songs on the album - Stuck Together Pieces speaks to the choices people make in life, and their consequences in the long-term.

    My Interpretation

Such a beautiful song, as are the others on this album.

To me, I see this song is about Thom explaining his struggle with trying to decipher his reality to achieve greater understanding about his self and or others. By sticking together pieces as if he is putting puzzles together. He knows he doesnt need to do this but he doesnt care, for some reason it attracts him. these questions, these puzzles. I also think Thom might see every individual as a single piece, and together on this planet we create the puzzle. While Thom is putting together these pieces or ideas about us, he is getting close to the understanding he is trying to achieve but once again misses the goal. He realizes the law of attraction and can tell that anyone can have what they want, although right now he wants to understand this puzzle so badly he is blind from actually solving the puzzle, maybe thinking too deeply. Thom is riddling himself with these questions about life, "why be rain when you could be sun?" why be sad when you can own yourself and shine like the sun. "why tie yourself to anyone" why get close to another? for love or for friendship, when these people will hurt you and you will probably hurt them in some form or another. "why be here when you can be somewhere else?" what is keeping you from doing and being where and who you want to be? and Thom notices these questions maybe haunting him , but once again he does not care, it feels too important to him to just forget and move on. Thom realizes he wont get away from these thoughts and questions about life, it is so hard for him to just put these thoughts to rest and live like a normal simple being. He wont get away easily. The last verse Thom is stating that even though he is haunted by these puzzles, he is still beautiful in anyway he looks at himself or the world. He realizes this is his journey to take and what he is doing is okay. He ultimately just wants to know where the gold is, where and when will he reach the end of this tunnel. He is desperate to know these truths he is looking for. He is still not achieving desired results, yet he is still trying to reach his goal. A quote that comes to mind is "The master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried". It is beautiful how he keeps pushing on despite all of his near misses. Thom knows he is doing all of this for understanding and growth. Even though he may be getting himself confused, and tormenting himself with these thoughts.

I recently felt this idea when listening to the song. I used to have different opinions on the song, but one day this idea made sense when listening and id thought id share.

    Thanks

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
