How to Be a Heartbreaker Lyrics

Rule number one, is that you gotta have fun
But baby when you're done, you gotta be the first to run
Rule number two, just don't get attached to
Somebody you could lose
So le-let me tell you

This is how to be a heartbreaker
Boys they like a little danger
We'll get him falling for a stranger
A player, singing I lo-lo-love you
How to be a heartbreaker
Boys they like the look of danger
We'll get him falling for a stranger
A player, singing I lo-lo-love you
At least I think I do

Cause I lo-lo-lo-love you

Rule number three, wear your heart on your cheek
But never on your sleeve, unless you wanna taste defeat
Rule number four, gotta be looking pure
Kiss him goodbye at the door, and leave him wanting more, more

This is how to be a heartbreaker
Boys they like a little danger
We'll get him falling for a stranger
A player, singing lo-lo-love you
How to be a heartbreaker
Boys they like the look of danger
We'll get him falling for a stranger
A player, singing lo-lo-love you
At least I think I do

Cause I lo-lo-love you

Girls, we do, whatever it will take
Cause girls don't want, we don't want our hearts to break in two
So it's better to be fake, can't risk losing
In love again, ba-abe

This is how to be a heartbreaker
Boys they like a little danger
We'll get him falling for a stranger
A player, singing lo-lo-love you
How to be a heartbreaker
Boys they like the look of danger
We'll get him falling for a stranger
A player, singing lo-lo-love you

Cause I lo-lo-lo-love you

At least I think I do

I haven't found this anywhere else on the internet, so I thought I would add my contribution, since I really like this lyric.

"Wear your heart on your cheek, but never on your sleeve..."

I feel that wearing one's tongue on one's cheek is a play on the phrase "tongue-in-cheek" which fits perfectly with the rest of the song. If you google "tongue in cheek" and check out the wiki entry, you will find it means,

"Tongue-in-cheek is a phrase used as a figure of speech to imply that a statement or other production is humorously or otherwise not seriously intended, and it should not be taken at face value."

By contrast, wearing one's heart on one's sleeve means (from Wiktionary),

"To be very transparent, open, or forthright about one's emotions."

So to wear one's heart on one's cheek is to be a player, to wear it on one's sleeve is an invitation for heartbreak. I think it's a brilliant lyric! And it makes me sad for people to say it "means nothing" or it's a misinterpretation of "heart on your sleeve."

My Interpretation

I meant, "to wear one's heart on one's cheek is a play on the phrase"***

I didn't know that and it makes me love the song even more!!! Even though it's pretty upbeat sounding it's about how she no longer wants to be played so she wears her heart on her cheek now. That line carries so much more meaning to me now, thanks for sharing!!!

I think this song is from the first reading about a cold stone woman who enjoys breaking hearts and only joins for love for fun. That's the first interpretation, but it's much deeper than that. What the song is getting at is about a woman who doesn't want her heart broken as it was broken too many times and created an idea that it's better to have many loves that never last than risk a love that is based on emotion. It's actually a very sad song since it's sung from the point of view of a very broken woman who can't hold a decent relationship because she's scared of them.

My Interpretation

Definately, seems like she just wants to get revenge on the 'Type of guys' who just stay with a girl until they get what they want because she has had her heart broken quite a few times before

Beautiful interpretation. really i think that if there wasn't the bridge where she sings "We do whatever it will take. cause we don't want our heart to break so it's better to be fake. cant risk losing..." you would think that it's about a woman who just likes to play with guys hearts, exept this bit shows how scared and broken she really is. If there are any Oncers here, who else agrees that this song really fits Regina?

A motivational song for girls about being in control of themselves and the relationships they may be in. And most importantly having fun!

I think this song is meant for us girls to keep our heart protected so we don't get it broken time, after time, again and again. It teaches you that the person who controls the relationship is the one who cares less. If you care more your going to do whatever it takes so that the person your trying to keep will stay.

@tiffany113 It's definitely teaching how to be a heartbreaker and to have defensive relationships, but could it also be that the song is meant as a type of warning and offering of insight? This sort of relationship protects, but also keeps you from feeling deeply and receiving joyously. The writer is probably telling a true story, but not necessarily saying this is how one Should act. Check out Brene Brown's Ted Talk on vulnerability. It's amazing.
