I think this song is meant for us girls to keep our heart protected so we don't get it broken time, after time, again and again. It teaches you that the person who controls the relationship is the one who cares less. If you care more your going to do whatever it takes so that the person your trying to keep will stay.

This sort of relationship protects, but also keeps you from feeling deeply and receiving joyously. The writer is probably telling a true story, but not necessarily saying this is how one Should act.
