A Stain On the Carpet Lyrics
It was a long night drinking whiskey
And I don't drink, so my head is turned around
After a long flight to another city
I can't think cause my head is off the ground
But that night came falling down
I spilled red wine on the carpet
Letting it sink in deep for days
So if you ever fall into dementia, it won't let you forget
I spent a long time swimming to depression
It's a state that will never leave my hands
Never a hard time
More like motivation
Now I blink, take a breath, and climb the stairs
And that night gets lost in air
I spilled red wine on your carpet
Letting it sink in deep for days
And if you ever fall into dementia, it won't let you forget
It won't let you forget
I spilled red wine on your carpet
I spilled red wine on your carpet
I spilled red wine on your carpet
I spilled red wine on the carpet
It won't let you forget
It won't let you forget
And I don't drink, so my head is turned around
After a long flight to another city
I can't think cause my head is off the ground
But that night came falling down
Letting it sink in deep for days
So if you ever fall into dementia, it won't let you forget
It's a state that will never leave my hands
Never a hard time
More like motivation
Now I blink, take a breath, and climb the stairs
And that night gets lost in air
Letting it sink in deep for days
And if you ever fall into dementia, it won't let you forget
It won't let you forget
I spilled red wine on your carpet
I spilled red wine on your carpet
I spilled red wine on your carpet
I spilled red wine on the carpet
It won't let you forget
It won't let you forget

I love this song so much. I feel like it might be sort of about him traveling a lot and being gone a lot and away from someone he loves. He tells the person that no matter how long he is gone, the stain will always be there as a reminder of him being there.
This might be totally wrong, but thats what I though of.
That sounds right to me SaraJean... But I also kind of took it from another angle.

Even though Ace Enders is married and your meaning makes complete sense... I originally thought the song could mean that he's drank his night away because he's depressed that he's missing someone he loved, but is no longer with. And when she grows old, (maybe she'll fall into dementia) at least the stain on her carpet, which could be a metaphor altogether, is that she will never forget him even though they're not together.

I feel like it's about hurting someone you were once close to. When you hurt someone, it leaves a stain. It's not something you can just scrub away. And no matter what happens in life, it's still there. And even though the singer was depressed about it once, he has let himself begin to breathe and leave it all behind and forgive himself, but he acknowledges that the stain remains for the other person. We never get over what we do to other people and what they do to us. The stain is always there and we just need to learn to put a piece of furniture over it, or ignore it, or embrace it.
I am in agreement with Dwight. Although I didn't think it had to be about hurting someone you love--I initially identified with song regarding something else entirely--I think that it is "your" carpet tends to support that.
"I spilled red wine on the carpet, Letting it sink in deep for days."
Generally, I think this song is about making a terrible mistake (the equivalent of spilling red wine on the carpet), the effect that can have on your brain, and the process of dealing with it all. Depression is a funny thing; even when you know you've fucked up, and know what you need to do in response, sometimes you just can't/won't. So you end up "letting it sink in deep for days," making the problem go from just bad to completely irreparable. It completely consumes you, and you can't ever get over it. Eventually, you have to move on with your life, and you do. Even though you can never forget the issue, you have to learn to live with it.
Anyways, I love this song, and it helped me deal with some pretty serious issues. I didn't like the album at first, for some reason, but love it now.
