I am in agreement with Dwight. Although I didn't think it had to be about hurting someone you love--I initially identified with song regarding something else entirely--I think that it is "your" carpet tends to support that.
"I spilled red wine on the carpet,
Letting it sink in deep for days."
Generally, I think this song is about making a terrible mistake (the equivalent of spilling red wine on the carpet), the effect that can have on your brain, and the process of dealing with it all.
Depression is a funny thing; even when you know you've fucked up, and know what you need to do in response, sometimes you just can't/won't. So you end up "letting it sink in deep for days," making the problem go from just bad to completely irreparable. It completely consumes you, and you can't ever get over it.
Eventually, you have to move on with your life, and you do. Even though you can never forget the issue, you have to learn to live with it.
Anyways, I love this song, and it helped me deal with some pretty serious issues. I didn't like the album at first, for some reason, but love it now.
