I love this song so much. I feel like it might be sort of about him traveling a lot and being gone a lot and away from someone he loves. He tells the person that no matter how long he is gone, the stain will always be there as a reminder of him being there.

I originally thought the song could mean that he's drank his night away because he's depressed that he's missing someone he loved, but is no longer with. And when she grows old, (maybe she'll fall into dementia) at least the stain on her carpet, which could be a metaphor altogether, is that she will never forget him even though they're not together.
