Would? [Album Version] Lyrics

Know me broken by my master
Teach thee on child, love of hereafter

Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way

Drifting body, it's sole desertion
Flying not yet, quite the notion

Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way

Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way

Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home?
Have I gone?
And left you here alone?

Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home? Yeah
Have I gone?
And left you here alone?

If I would, could you?

Cover art for Would? [Album Version] lyrics by Alice in Chains

I feel like this is about addiction and how it subtly lures you into what you at first feel are higher states of consciousness. After a while though, you realize that you may have gone too far to recover on your own.

Know me broken by my master Teach thee on child, love hereafter

[Let me tell you about my addiction (master) and how it broke me] [I'll remind you that in the end, all there is, is love]

Into the flood again Same old trip it was back then So I made a big mistake Try to see it once my way

[I tried to recover, but relapsed. I thought it would be better/easier this time - please try to understand]

Drifting body, it's sole desertion Flying, not yet quite the notion

[I love the feeling of being high, but I still know that it is slowly killing me]

Into the flood again Same old trip it was back then So I made a big mistake Try to see it once my way

[Going back to the addiction]

Into the flood again Same old trip it was back then So I made a big mistake Try to see it once my way

[Going back to the addiction]

Am I wrong? Have I run too far to get home? Have I gone? Left you here alone?

[This is self reflection - asking yourself whether or not you've taken your addiction too far and have no way of recovering on your own.]

Am I wrong? Have I run too far to get home? Have I gone?

Left you here alone? If I would, could you?

[If i WOULD (try), COULD (you do it physically) - makes me think this was Layne referring to heroin and the horrible physical pain of recovery. A question to himself about whether or not he could stand it if he tried.]
