Rock & Roll Lyrics
He's been waiting around for the weekend
Figuring which club to sneak in
Fancy drinks and fifty dollar cover charge
Lately it's been a big hassle
Heineken and new castle
To make sure he's fitting in and living large
Disregard the lies that he will tell and what he's probably like
'Cause it's not hard his charm is gonna get him through the night
If he wants to rock he rocks
If he wants to roll he rolls
He can roll with the punches long as he feels like he's in control
If he wants to stay he stays
If he wants to go he goes
He doesn't care how he gets there long as he gets somewhere he knows
See her heavy makeup and cut t-shirt
Every girl out wants to be her
But they look the same already why adjust
Reading the magazine secrets
Forgetting the topical regrets
'Cause if she comes home all alone the night's a bust
It's a must the swivel in her hips and the look she gives
It's all her trust if only in the morning she knew where she lived
If she wants to rock she rocks
If she wants to roll she rolls
She can roll with the punches long as she feels like she's in control
If she wants to stay she stays
If she wants to go she goes
She doesn't care how she gets there long as she gets somewhere she knows
And in a wink they're on the brink
From drink to drink and at the bar with cash to blow
Shot to shot it's getting hot
Advance the plot to see how far it's gonna go
All depends so ditch the friends and grab a cab
Another chance at cheap romance
Doesn't count 'cause the room is spinning
Nothing to lose tonight they both are winning
And they fall in love as they fall in bed
If they want to rock they rocks
If they want to roll they rolls
They can roll with the punches long as they feels like they're in control
If they want to stay they stay
If they want to go they go
They don't care how they get there long as they get somewhere they know

This song sounds very lighthearted and the video is great fun (a bunch of people waiting in line for popsicles and ice cream). The reality of it is that it's about two very shallow people who are after the same thing - sex. And they'll do whatever it takes to get it. It's more or less an updated version of the old Jimmy Buffet song "Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw?" Eric Hutchinson's approach is a little less direct, but nevertheless, it has exactly the same meaning. Not much depth or philosophizing in this song, but fun to listen to.
I think gbear was the closest. It's pretty clear Hutchinson is portraying them as shallow, describing the guy as a conformist and snake ('Disregard the lies that he will tell and what he's probably like' and 'his charm will get him through the night'), and the girl equally conforming ('every girl out wants to be her but they look the same already'). They're both out for sex. One thing people miss is he's pointing out the superficiality of it all; "cheap romance", the humor of 'love' existing amidst the drunken stupor ('doesn't count b/c the room is spinning'), and the idea of two complete strangers, both pretending to be people they're not, living up what amounts to be empty 'rock and roll' weekend facades. I definitely find there is a level of depth to this catchy tune.
i love this song. it think hes talking about a guy whos an outsider to the high life, so he fakes to be one of them with his charm and sneaks in to clubs to fit in then about a gorgeous girl whos envied by all other female onlookers, who goes out with the mindset of getting a guy. so they meet, go home together and "fall in love as they fall in bed"
I think its a little more general than just these two people... And I don't necessarily see it as being the "high life," just talking about guys who are dead set on their image and do whatever it takes to project a specific image - and hes saying these guys are gonna lie and do whatever it takes to fit in and, well to get into someones pants. The girls are general in the sense that everyone follows the same fads and go out not to have a good time but to score, just like the guys. "she" only wears whats in style, looks like everyone else and is miserable if she goes home alone. Its people who are lonely but are comfortable in their roles at the same time - they don't care as long as they have control, and these "people" control by putting on a facade and screwing - and she falls in love for the night, and the next day its over and that's just the cycle. Reminds me of college and how a lot of young professional peers act when they go out - they just want that moment of acceptance and love from the opposite sex and even though its not real, they feel like they have control over it which comforts them.
i deff think it's all about a night in a bar and a one night stand. both are fine with the situation as long as they feel in charge. i adore this song, it's so catchy.
does this song reminde anyone of the book the catcher and the rye?
I agree!
I agree!
I think of catcher in the rye when i hear this song. His whole attitude and everything.

The song seems like its talking about a young guy trying to fit in and who lies to get what he wants. And the young girl is a prostitute and basically they end up at the bar together and they're laughing and drinking and just having a good time. They leave the bar together for a one night stand so they both end up getting what they want.
I agree with MokeyMarta here about this song. I think it’s a cleverly disguised stab at the whole "club scene" actually.

I think if you listen peripherally you hear a story about two people who get drunk and sleep together, but when you really listen and dissect the phrases, you totally pick up on Erics views on the whole clubbing scene. He uses clever phrases like "another chance for CHEAP romance" and "if only in the morning she knew where she lived" and "doesn't count cuz the room is spinning," too clearly show how lame...

I think it's brilliant, and I totally love him for picking this for his single! It’s a brave choice in my opinion!
One of the major things I like about Eric Hutchinson is that he's not afraid to put his morals into his songs, morals that by "secular" opinions could be viewed as conservative or old fashioned. I like that his music has a point view and that that view is postive.
I see this as a general song welcoming anyone and everyone. For just a night you are allowed to be anyone you want to be and do anything you want to.
I think this is relaxed and fun, I love it!
I say we're all trying to fit in, even those of use who fit in by not looking like other people. it's about honesty with who you are, and if you're honest about what you want you might get it.
and maybe if people who wanted sex went after that rather than power we'd all be a lot better off.
