By Now Lyrics

How've you been? Can I come in?
Just came to get my things and then I guess I'm leaving
If I could say what you'd like to hear
I'd whisper in your ear it's only temporary
But I've been taking you for granted

I thought you'd feel the same as me
It's time that I come clean, but
But for now can we just both pretend to sleep
Sometimes the one you want is not the one you need
What goes around don't come around
You should know me by now

Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
I should know you as well
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me by now

Our talk is small, I'm seven inches tall
And you should keep the apartment
So here's my keys, changed all the bills
We're only built to spill and wonder where the heart went
You've been taking me for granted.

I thought you'd feel the same as me
It's time that I come clean, but
But for now can we just both pretend to sleep
Sometimes the one you want is not the one you need
What goes around don't come around
You should know me by now

Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
I should know you as well
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me by now

I know that I remember you
I think that you remember me too
How can one of us still feel blessed when the other one's lost
I know you've got to feel the change
It just gets worse when it stays the same
How can one of us still feel blessed when the other one's so lost

By now
Oh yeah

Sometimes the one you want is not the one you need
What goes around don't come around
Don't you know me by now?

Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
I should know you as well
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me by now

Another great song of the album

I would say the main line is 'Sometimes the one you want is not the one you need' he loved the idea of having this person and never really got to know this person therefore leading to it not working sadly that's my opinion

Some probably won't feel the same, but I just felt like I should share my interpretation.

I don't believe this song was written with the purpose of it coming across as only a love song. I think it's more about that one person who is always there for you, whether it be a close friend or a lover, it's that one person. But then, all the sudden that person isn't there anymore. Kind of like the relationship was a teeter totter, one end feels so much differently then the other.

'Sometimes the one you want, is not the person you need.'

We want that one person who is always there for us, and though we feel we need them, sometimes they aren't the one we need. Sometimes that person and you just weren't meant to have whatever connection you thought you had.

Err... The more I write this the more I feel I have a bad interpretation. Oh, well! Suits the situation I'm in, so I'll keep it. :P

Some more relationship reflections from my first ever romantic relationship:

"How've you been? Can I come in? Just came to get my things and then I guess I'm leaving"

This particular segment of the song doesn't really relate to the relationship that I had with my ex because we never lived with each other or anything. The only reason I'd go see him would be to pick up my book that I lent him, but not gonna happen!

"If I could say what you'd like to hear I'd whisper in your ear it's only temporary But I've been taking you for granted"

A part of me just wanted to take a break from what we had for the time being and get back together once he had more free time to spend with me, but then I realized he was taking me for granted and I didn't want to wait around and be walked all over any longer.

"I thought you'd feel the same as me It's time that I come clean, but But for now can we just both pretend to sleep"

When I ended things, I expected him to fight for me, to fight for us, but no! I really didn't want us to be over, but he wasn't putting the effort in anymore and I didn't have the physical or the mental capacity to carry the burden alone. I had tried many time to communicate what it was that I needed, but he just didn't get it and wouldn't even try to understand.

"Sometimes the one you want is not the one you need What goes around don't come around You should know me by now"

I wanted him and he claimed to want me, but it's like, if you really want someone, wouldn't you continue to put the same effort in throughout the whole relationship? Wouldn't you take the time to communicate what it is you need in order for the relationship to be a success? I'll admit, he did communicate his needs, but he didn't validate my own needs and what good of a relationship is it when only one partner is getting their needs met? What I gave to him I wasn't getting in return. I thought he would have known me better than he did, but I guess not.

"Our talk is small, I'm seven inches tall And you should keep the apartment So here's my keys, changed all the bills We're only built to spill and wonder where the heart went You've been taking me for granted."

It didn't use to be small, but as we were nearing the end of our relationship, our talk didn't go as deep as it used to because he wouldn't open up as much like he did before. So in the end, we were only built to spill and wondering where the heart went when really, no relationship is going to be all happy-go-lucky all the time. He really did take me for granted.

"I know that I remember you I think that you remember me too How can one of us still feel blessed when the other one's lost I know you've got to feel the change It just gets worse when it stays the same How can one of us still feel blessed when the other one's so lost"

Obviously I remembered him, as I continued to make the time to get to know him and stuff, but him? He stopped remembering stuff that mattered to me. I was lost and he...idk how he was feeling in the end. I wish that he could have kept changing along with me, but he somewhere along the line, he stayed put, leaving me to push forward without him.

Story of my life once upon a time. A relationship between two people is ending but they don't want to face it; they just want to "pretend to sleep," instead of talking about it. "Sometimes the one you want is not the one you need,"

My Interpretation
Cover art for By Now lyrics by Marianas Trench

How've you been? Can I come in? Just came to get my things and then I guess I'm leaving

They broke up, and he was coming back to the apartment to get his stuff, it's super awkward because of what had happened between them.

If I could say what you'd like to hear I'd whisper in your ear it's only temporary But I've been taking you for granted

He would like to say what she wants, that everything is temporary and it will go back to the way it was, but it's not true. He can't lie like that. He's been taking there relationship for granted and now it's over, and it's never going back to how it was.

I thought you'd feel the same as me It's time that I come clean, but But for now can we just both pretend to sleep Sometimes the one you want is not the one you need What goes around don't come around You should know me by now

He thought she loved him the way he loved her, but she actually didn't. It should be the time that he tells the truth, but he's going to put it off, and pretend to sleep. Just because he loves her doesn't mean she loves him back. She should know all of this by now, but she doesn't.

Better than, better than, better than You should know me Better than, better than, better than You should know me Better than, better than, better than You should know me Better than, better than, better than I should know you as well Better than, better than, better than You should know me Better than, better than, better than You should know me Better than, better than, better than You should know me Better than, better than, better than You should know me by now

She should know him by now, know it by now. There's things he's been keeping from her but also things that she hasn't picked up on.

Our talk is small, I'm seven inches tall And you should keep the apartment So here's my keys, changed all the bills We're only built to spill and wonder where the heart went You've been taking me for granted.

They're talking, but it's nothing imortant, just mindless chatter. He feels small, and nothing he says seems to matter. He's giving up, he wants to leave so bad and he just gives up everything, gives her the apartment and leaves. They're only created to tear themselves apart and wonder what happened. He realizes that he hasn't been taking her for granted, it's the other way around.

I know that I remember you I think that you remember me too

He remembers who she used to be, and he is hoping she remembers who he used to be, because they're different people now.

How can one of us still feel blessed when the other one's lost I know you've got to feel the change It just gets worse when it stays the same How can one of us still feel blessed when the other one's so lost

He's questioning how she can she be happy when he's falling apart. He knows she knows things have changed yet he's frusturated that she acts like things are fine. They continue to descend into madness because they're not doing anything about it.

Sometimes the one you want is not the one you need What goes around don't come around Don't you know me by now?

Just because he wants to be with her doesn't mean it's the right thing to do to stay. he doesn't need this, even though he wants it.

@Emnm2468 Haha that was literally you just rewriting the lyrics and the definitions of certain words. Made me laugh tho! So good on ya.
