How've you been?
Can I come in?
Just came to get my things and then I guess I'm leaving
If I could say
What you'd like to hear
I'd whisper in your ear it's only temporary
But I've been taking you for granted

And I thought you'd feel the same as me
It's time that I come clean, but
But for now can we
Just both pretend to sleep
Sometimes the one you want is not the one you need
What goes around don't come around
You should know me by now

Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than
I should know you as well

Better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, you should know me by now

Our talk is small, I'm seven inches tall
And you should keep the apartment
So here's my keys
Changed all the bills
We're only built to spill and wonder where the heart went
And you've been taking me for granted

And I thought you'd feel the same as me
It's time that I come clean, but
But for now can we
Just both pretend to sleep
Sometimes the one you want is not the one you need
What goes around don't come around
You should know me by now

Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, I should know you as well

Better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, you should know me by now

I know that I remember you
I think that you remember me too
How can one of us still feel blessed when the other one's lost
I know you've got to feel the change
It just stays worse when it stays the same
How can one of us
Still feel blessed when the other one's so lost

By now

Sometimes the one you want is not the one you need
What goes around don't come around
Don't you know me by now?

Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, I should know you as well

Better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, better than
You should know me
Better than, you should know me by now

Another great song of the album

I would say the main line is 'Sometimes the one you want is not the one you need' he loved the idea of having this person and never really got to know this person therefore leading to it not working sadly that's my opinion

    My Interpretation

Some probably won't feel the same, but I just felt like I should share my interpretation.

I don't believe this song was written with the purpose of it coming across as only a love song. I think it's more about that one person who is always there for you, whether it be a close friend or a lover, it's that one person. But then, all the sudden that person isn't there anymore. Kind of like the relationship was a teeter totter, one end feels so much differently then the other.

'Sometimes the one you want, is not the person you need.'

We want that one person who is always there for us, and though we feel we need them, sometimes they aren't the one we need. Sometimes that person and you just weren't meant to have whatever connection you thought you had.

Err... The more I write this the more I feel I have a bad interpretation. Oh, well! Suits the situation I'm in, so I'll keep it. :P

    My Interpretation

Story of my life once upon a time. A relationship between two people is ending but they don't want to face it; they just want to "pretend to sleep," instead of talking about it. "Sometimes the one you want is not the one you need,"

How've you been? Can I come in? Just came to get my things and then I guess I'm leaving

They broke up, and he was coming back to the apartment to get his stuff, it's super awkward because of what had happened between them.

If I could say what you'd like to hear I'd whisper in your ear it's only temporary But I've been taking you for granted

He would like to say what she wants, that everything is temporary and it will go back to the way it was, but it's not true. He can't lie like that. He's been taking there relationship for granted and now it's over, and it's never going back to how it was.

I thought you'd feel the same as me It's time that I come clean, but But for now can we just both pretend to sleep Sometimes the one you want is not the one you need What goes around don't come around You should know me by now

He thought she loved him the way he loved her, but she actually didn't. It should be the time that he tells the truth, but he's going to put it off, and pretend to sleep. Just because he loves her doesn't mean she loves him back. She should know all of this by now, but she doesn't.

Better than, better than, better than You should know me Better than, better than, better than You should know me Better than, better than, better than You should know me Better than, better than, better than I should know you as well Better than, better than, better than You should know me Better than, better than, better than You should know me Better than, better than, better than You should know me Better than, better than, better than You should know me by now

She should know him by now, know it by now. There's things he's been keeping from her but also things that she hasn't picked up on.

Our talk is small, I'm seven inches tall And you should keep the apartment So here's my keys, changed all the bills We're only built to spill and wonder where the heart went You've been taking me for granted.

They're talking, but it's nothing imortant, just mindless chatter. He feels small, and nothing he says seems to matter. He's giving up, he wants to leave so bad and he just gives up everything, gives her the apartment and leaves. They're only created to tear themselves apart and wonder what happened. He realizes that he hasn't been taking her for granted, it's the other way around.

I know that I remember you I think that you remember me too

He remembers who she used to be, and he is hoping she remembers who he used to be, because they're different people now.

How can one of us still feel blessed when the other one's lost I know you've got to feel the change It just gets worse when it stays the same How can one of us still feel blessed when the other one's so lost

He's questioning how she can she be happy when he's falling apart. He knows she knows things have changed yet he's frusturated that she acts like things are fine. They continue to descend into madness because they're not doing anything about it.

Sometimes the one you want is not the one you need What goes around don't come around Don't you know me by now?

Just because he wants to be with her doesn't mean it's the right thing to do to stay. he doesn't need this, even though he wants it.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
