Afterlife Lyrics
I've tasted fire, I'm ready to come alive
I cant just shut it up and fake that I'm alright
I'm ready now, I'm not waiting for the afterlife
I let it burn the way the sunlight burns my skin
The way I feel inside, the way the day begins
I'm ready now, I'm not waiting for the other side
I'm ready now, I'm ready now
'Cause every day the world is made
A chance to change, but I feel the same
And I wonder why would I wait til I die to come alive?
I'm ready now, I'm not waiting for the afterlife
I still believe we can live forever
You and I we begin forever now
Forever now, forever
I still believe in us together
You and I we're here together now
Forever now, forever now
Or never now
'Cause every day the world is made
A chance to change, but I feel the same
And I wonder why would I wait til I die to come alive?
I'm ready now, I'm not waiting for the afterlife
Every day a choice is made
Every day I choose my fate
And I wonder why would I wait til I die to come alive?
To come alive?
Every day, every day, every day i still feel the same
And I wonder why would I wait til I die to come alive?
I'm ready now, I'm not waiting for the afterlife
I'm ready now, I'm ready now, I'm ready
I'm ready now, I'm not waiting for the afterlife
I cant just shut it up and fake that I'm alright
I'm ready now, I'm not waiting for the afterlife
The way I feel inside, the way the day begins
I'm ready now, I'm not waiting for the other side
I'm ready now, I'm ready now

And I wonder why would I wait til I die to come alive?

You and I we're here together now
Forever now, forever now
Or never now
A chance to change, but I feel the same
And I wonder why would I wait til I die to come alive?
I'm ready now, I'm not waiting for the afterlife
Every day I choose my fate
And I wonder why would I wait til I die to come alive?
To come alive?
Every day, every day, every day i still feel the same
And I wonder why would I wait til I die to come alive?
I'm ready now, I'm not waiting for the afterlife
I'm ready now, I'm ready now, I'm ready
I'm ready now, I'm not waiting for the afterlife

I think this song is about making the most out of our lives. As Christians we're always said Death will lead us to Eternal Life, in companion with God but sometimes we forget about the most beautiful present He ever gave to us: LIFE. So it's time to make the most out of it and prepare ourselves for what's coming next.
It's interesting how similer the relationship between man/life/afterlife is to the relationship between a man who's away from his lover/home. there's a lot of distance in there, almost an invisible barrier that seperates the two sides from each other. When a man's away from his lover/home, he often carries pieces of it/her along with him, it's what helps him survive in a rather frustrating and difficult situation. There are many more complicated situations in life than a relationship though, There's war/poverty/racism and violance. though the two opposing sides in these kind of situations are the people who are in charge of running the world rather than...

There are many more complicated situations in life than a relationship though, There's war/poverty/racism and violance. though the two opposing sides in these kind of situations are the people who are in charge of running the world rather than simple-minded indivisuals in life, the indivisuals are merely the unlucky victims of these circumstances, they're the ones who make all the sacrifices and whatnot, though we're not proud of watching, we've been through the troubles ourselves and we're so tired of it all, so tired of these feelings, so tired of being trapped, forced and controlled by everything and everyone around us, we want to come alive, we want to rise above these circumstances, we want to change the world...we know that it can never be perfect, but it can be inhanced, it can be better...we have seen it! we have seen with our own eyes what love and peace can do to people, it can bring them together, we've seen signs of mutual agreement, signs of an immortal hope that transcends the worst of our actions. yes, everyday...we are given a chance! a chance to change, a chance to rebel, to set an example to the world, we can't just shut it up, we can't just fake that we're satisfied with the way things are, we want something more! this song feels like Switchfoot went so close near the finish line, they went so close to dying, they've tasted the fire, they've tasted death! and now they want to live even more! this is a song about love and hope, this is a song about life and the journey that we all must go through.
I think that what is also intimated is that often some Christians mistakenly believe that when they die they then experience the Kingdom of God, but in the lyrics "everyday I get to choose my fate" can simply mean everyday you can experience God's kingdom Today through the life of Jesus. Jesus spoke of the kingdom at hand, that is the whole point of the gospels. John 3: 3,5, also in Psalms 145:13, you see the reference. The choice is weather we are going to be an active part in it. " Are you ready now" can easily be interpreted as are you ready to accept Jesus and begin to live in the kingdom of heaven now. The lyrics are full of the opportunity to choose each day to live the live of Jesus as a Christian, not just do good things and wait until we die and hopefully get to heaven to experience Gods Kingdom. Jesus came among us to show and teach the life for which we were made. He came very gently, opened access to the governance of God with him, and gives us the opportunity of freedom in truth. He overcame death and remains among us. By relying on his works and presence, we are able to have that little realm that makes up our life into the infinite rule of God. That is the Eternal kind of life. Accepting Jesus and living the life he instructed for us allows us to experience the kingdom now. Which by the way is awesome. That is the choice, that is the "chance to change". Are you "ready now, or are you waiting for the afterlife"

This song afterlife by switchfoot in my opinion it's more of a Christian related song. Why? Well it mentions some of what nowadays Christians talk about. For example: "I've tasted fire I'm ready to come alive ill let it burn the way the sunlight burns my skin" this is talking about of what I assume the fire if God when you finally accept him you finally taste his fire and are ready to come alive. Another reason why is near the end he quotes "everyday I choose my fate" I think he's referring to when your ready and your purpose in this world is done you can ask God to set out your fate however you want. All in all I see this song as a Christian (Pentecostal) view point. In fading west I hope he talks about where his mind was about this song and the rest in vice verses. This is an opinion at the end of the day I'm not sure if Jon had this in mind I'm just giving an opinion..
I think MSF's take is on the right path, but there is more in my opinion.
Many Christians "believe" they are living a good life, but good deeds is not the passage to Heaven. The song implies recognizing the sins of this life and realizing a life in Heaven begins now .... not in the afterlife. Why wait? And in the excitement of this personal revelation, live it openly and loud. "I cant just shut it up and fake that I'm alright" ... sharing it with others and suggesting that everyday is a chance to make the same commitment. Why wait? But where I think it comes back to MSF's suggestion of living in the here and now and LIFE is the recognition that LIFE is precious and will end. Have you made your commitment to Christ and lived it, or are you faking it? Are you ... "ready now?" Because if your life ended today, the Afterlife may be too late ...
