Thinkin' Bout You Lyrics
A tornado flew around my room before you came
Excuse the mess it made, it usually doesn't rain in
Southern California, much like Arizona
My eyes don't shed tears, but boy, they bawl
When I'm thinkin' bout ya, ooh no no no
I've been thinkin' bout ya, you know know know
I've been thinkin' bout ya, do you think about me still?
Do ya? Do ya?
Or do you not think so far ahead?
'Cause I've been thinkin' bout forever, ooh
Or do you not think so far ahead?
'Cause I've been thinkin' bout forever, ooh
No, I don't like you, i just thought you were cool enough to kick it
Got a beach house I could sell you in Idaho
Since you think I don't love you, I just thought you were cute, that's why I kiss you
Got a fighter jet I don't get to fly it though I'm lying down
Thinkin' bout ya, ooh no no no
I've been thinkin' bout ya, you know know know
I've been thinkin' bout ya, do you think about me still?
Do ya? Do ya?
Or do you not think so far ahead?
'Cause I've been thinkin' bout forever, ooh
Or do you not think so far ahead?
'Cause I've been thinkin' bout forever, ooh
Yes, of course I remember, how could I forget how you feel?
You know you were my first time, a new feel
It will never get old, not in my soul, not in my spirit, keep it alive
We'll go down this road 'til it turns from color to black and white
Or do you not think so far ahead?
'Cause I've been thinkin' bout forever, ooh

In light of his recent blog 'confession,' I really really think this song is about the relationship he was talking about in it. His first love. Frank said that the guy he was in love with wouldn't admit he had the same feelings when Frank told him how he felt.
I think the verses of this song are fragments of their conversations with each other.
Like, this verse is the guy's response after Frank's confession: "No, I don't like you, I just thought you were cool enough to kick it" "Since you think I don't love you, I just thought you were cute That's why I kiss you"
And this verse is Frank's response to the guy after he admits he feels the same way years later. Or I don't know, could still be from the guy's point of view...once they see each other again. .... I haven't decided: "Yes, of course I remember, how could I forget how you feel? And though you were my first time, A new feel. It won't ever get old, not in my soul Not in my spirit, keep it alive We'll go down this road 'Til it turns from color to black and white"
Frank is an inspiration. Incredibly talented.... And I now have an even greater respect for him and his courage to say what he said and speak straight from the heart.

I agree! When he came out, the song finally made sense to me. It definitely felt like it was about a man vs. a woman that he's talking about.

This is strictly hypothetical. So I apologize in advance but I'm wondering if there's something more about the line regarding "color to black & white"? Personally speaking for myself (And I am gay). Do you feel it also has to do with racial boundaries possibly preventing the relationship from going further.

I apologize for the hypothetical analogy. I'm just so enamored with this song. I feel like there's a sense of alienation, even a quiet desperation or plea, yet somehow a sad resignation (maybe acceptance?) of the relationship not being able to go further due to some inane...

I'm babbling but please comment if you can. Or tell me I'm being an idiot. Thanks and take care.
mwanteroon, you know I've actually also thought about what you said about the line "Til it turns from color to black and white" and whether it was a race thing.

It could also be just a way of him saying that he wished things were simpler, that it was more black and white and not the complicated relationship they have.

I also have it in my mind that the guy is/was in the military. There are like 3 different songs that allude to the military in some way, including this one (the fighter jet line).
I don't know, I've just been listening to Channel Orange constantly since it dropped and this is the shit I think about lol
@ Lilybear Thanks. It is an amazing album. The reason I bring it up is the lyric itself has so many meanings behind it. Not only does it construe the dissolving of a relationship but also how the relationship will become a memory. Hence, the "Black and White" reference alluding to going down the same road. Ever and ever.
It is a beautiful, powerful song. And I have to say that Frank Ocean, AKA Christopher Breaux, is an amazing, profound poet who literally opened his heart to everyone. And you can clearly see, hear and feel it in his songs. Brilliant talent IMO.
Agreed! I kinda think he was still in the closet when he wrote about this, and didn't know what to do with his feelings for this mysterious man. The line: "We'll go down this road til it turns from color to black and white" - my interpretation of that is, "colour" (rainbow, gay pride) to black and white ("straight") .. he's still dealing with his feelings and thinks that maybe he can get over what he presumes is a phase of some sort.

Damn, I love reading everyone's thoughts on these lyrics. It's really interesting.

Oh, and btw mwantero, you asked in your first response if you think that the 'black and white' line has to do with racial boundaries preventing the relationship from going further. I don't think that's the kind of thing that would stop either of them from being together if being together is what they both wanted. Bigotry against bi-racial relationships is sooo last century... an OF member wouldn't care about that :P

It's about us still not being able to reach a point in history where people can...
It's about us still not being able to reach a point in history where people can just love whoever they want without any social repercussions. Two men can't love each other openly because it's not socially acceptable, ESPECIALLY in the hip hop community.... It sucks.
This is why what he's saying is so important.
mwantero in response to your question about the color to black and white line, it seems to me that he's saying that his memory of what he felt for his first love is never going to leave him, it's just going to become a more and more distant memory until it's so far away it seems "black and white." But it will always remain an inseparable part of him, all of those emotions that he felt have left their mark, all the highs and the lows.

Excellent post, I never thought of parts of the lyrics being from the opposite side!

-This verse just makes me thnk he had a temper tamtrum crying and fucking up his room because he is upset because he misses this girl and he doesnt ususally act like this (i.e crying) but "boy they bawl" when he thinks about her.
Thinkin' bout ya, ooh no no no I've been thinkin' bout ya, you know know know I've been thinkin' bout ya, do you think about me still? Do ya? Do ya?
-This part is self explainatory. He is thinking about her and wants to know if she thinks about him too

No, I don't like you, i just thought you were cool enough to kick it Got a beach house I could sell you in Idaho Since you think I don't love you, I just thought you were cute, that's why I kiss you Got a fighter jet I don't get to fly it though I'm lying down
THATS MY TWO CENTS.
The “I got a beach house I can sell you in Idaho” line isn’t random.

I got a house I can sell you is a well known sarcastic saying; it’s equivalent to saying yeah right.

The fact that it’s a beach house and in Idaho only enhances the sarcastic sentiment since there aren’t any beaches in Idaho, or at least the kind people are used to seeing.

Girl: You don’t really like me you just thought I was cool/cute and that’s why you’re hanging/kicking it with me. Frank (being sarcastic): Yeah and I got a house that I could sell you (translation: GTFO with that expletive girl!).
My interpretation of the fighter jet line is this:
If you have an item that is broken, such as a car in the shop, are you getting to use it? What he’s saying is he has a girl that’s a real catch. If you were to think of her as a high level car she would be a Ferrari or a McLaren F1, only better and thus he compares her to a jet, which is what really rich people are buying nowadays anyway. There’s a catch, however, because they can’t take their relationship to the next level because of the girl’s doubts about Frank’s true feelings. Thus, he can’t release the full potential of their relationship just as you can’t release the full potential of a jet or a plane w/o flying it. I also like your interpretation that he is literally lying down thinking about her.
there are lots of beach houses in idaho it's called BEAR LAKE also this song is about a MAN

I love what you said about the "lying down" double meaning. never would have caught that (: and beach house in idaho could be "we can escape somewhere & he can make himself comfortable in his mind/body/soul lol Idaho=(I'm the hoe) basically, like julia roberts in pretty woman when she says "I appreciate this whole seduction thing you've got going on here, but let me give you a tip: I'M A SURE THING. wink in a joking way, of course :D

@pytiffany210 Haha ya'll are funny, seriously missing his sarcasm with the beach house line and how that ties into the whole section of the song. If someone will believe anything you tell them, a common joke is to offer to sell them a beach house in a place where no beach houses exist (lake houses in Idaho people, not beach houses). Fighter jet, same thing. He doesn't have one, he's saying, "If you really believe I don't like you, you'll believe anything." Finally he ends it by calling himself out, saying "I'm lying" and then sliding...

I have two interpretations for this song.
1) It's about a guy who really falls for a girl like he's never fallen before. It's really the first time he's felt something this strong. And though he was sure she felt the same, that scared part of him makes him doubt himself. Then he finds himself trying to play it cool as if he wasn't so in love ("I don't like you I just thought you were cool enough to kick it since you don't think.. etc.) when in reality, he wants to spend forever with her, but is just scared that the feeling isn't mutual.
Then the next one
2) He just went through a break-up and doesn't believe he can get through it. They broke it off because she believes that he doesn't love her or doesn't show it well, when he really did but just didn't know how to show his affection.
@realFuggenG I agree with your first interpretation although that's mostly because of my current situation

denial, lying to oneself about how someone feels about you, blowing things out of proportion, imagining things that aren't really there . . . the singer is left imprinted and deeply touched unlike the one he's thinking about, the one who doesn't think so far ahead
This song is so sad, beautifully tragic. It's about unrequited love. This person loves this other person, but that person doesn't seem to notice that that person loves this person. This song is full of contradictories and lies. The first line about the tornado ruining his room, he says that his life is a mess because of something else, but really about the fact this person doesn't realise that he loves him. As you can tell this person thinks about this person a lot. In the second stanza it's to ridicule the person who doesn't realise how stupid he is that he can't see that he loves him. He didn't kiss him because of love but for fun (Lie #1) Got a beach house I can sell you in Idaho (Lie #2 there are no beaches in Idaho but there are lake houses) Since you think I don't love you I just thought you were cute that's why I kissed you (Lie #3 Direct line to show that this guy loves him but doesn't know it). In the third stanza he confronts this guy about his emotions, saying he's his first love and how he wishes this story would end up beautiful from colour to black and white.
the feel i get from this song is...
his life wasn't good until this girl came into his life and hes thinkin bout her and a future "cuz i've been thinkin bout forever"..now he's questioning her love for him "or do you not think so far ahead?"..
its a good r&b song so soothing and i can relate..this guy is prob wondering if i feel something for him..i just don't know until i see him again. i haven't seen him in like 2months b.c i've been away and his been home sweet home..so until i go back i'll see how things go from there." . "Yes, of course I remember, how could I forget how you feel? You know you were my first time, a new feel It will never get old, not in my soul, not in my spirit, keep it alive"..
I do think that far ahead, I think about forever too. I lay
Far as I can tell this song is about a guy pining for a person who's long, long, long gone.
I'm pretty sure this song is about Frank's first gay experience "I remember, how could I forget? How you feel? And though you were my first time A new feel"
pytiffany210 I think she has a good point, that's what I see in this song too. Like maybe theyre in a relationship, and he loves her, but doesnt express it much, and she loves him but is wondering if he loves her. She's confused, but in this song he's expressing his feelings. They are together and he's thinking about their future together, but does she think they will last that long? Does she think about the future too? Her wonders. But the one above mines, tells a great meaning.
