Sad Savior Lyrics

Skin against skin
covering bone on the body you're in
is aggressively slim
yeah, you earn the clothes you put on
covering up where you've been
leave those scars at home
let them slide down the length of your spine
across your knees and down to your feet
they slow our momentum
each time you're reminded they're there...

You don't have to pretend to be an orphan anymore
you don't have to pretend to be important anymore

That brutal youth
exhumed and removed
entombed in a box
cached across your room
it slows our momentum
each time I'm reminded it's there
Your anxious tongue
spills cautious words
yeah, it's gotten so used to being misunderstood.
You do your best to control it,
remind yourself that you care

You don't have to pretend to be an orphan anymore
you don't have to pretend to be important anymore

Hey, sad savior, you don't have to pretend to be an orphan anymore

Oh never, not ever again
is what you swore
the last time this happened
never not ever again
are you gonna settle for those bastards
Never, not ever again
never, (no never), no never,
never, not ever again
is what you swore

You don't have to pretend to be an orphan anymore
you don't have to pretend to be important anymore

Hey, sad savior, you don't have to pretend to be an orphan anymore

I think this song is about a relationship, and possibly having to come to terms with certain things your partner has done in the past, and deciding whether or not you can accept them and move on.

"That brutal youth exhumed and removed entombed in a box cached across your room it slows our momentum each time I'm reminded it's there"

I think that means, things the person did in their past are sometimes brought up and thought about, and it slows the momentum of the relationship when you have to think about them (ie. the person being with another, an ex, maybe they have a history of cheating, etc.)

While I do think it's about a relationship - I don't think it's a bf/gf relationship. Seems like it's about the relationship between Adam and John Nolan. Specifically, "Never, not ever again" is from the end of Nolan's "A Slow Decent" where he sang about finally breaking free of TBS and not "settling for those bastards." After something like seven years, John came back to the band for this album and I think this song (and the album to a degree) is about their (somewhat guarded) reunion. This song in particular seems like Adam is getting in a few shots about all of the stuff John wrote about TBS when he formed Straylight Run.

I believe this song is referring to a relationship. The singer's partner was perhaps beaten as a child by their parents in "that brutal youth" or assaulted in any way by family or maybe even that they were abused by past partners, since it seems that their past is "entombed in a box thats cached 'cross the room." The singer, by telling their partner they "don't have to pretend to be an orphan anymore," theyre saying that they dont have to pretend that what happened in their childhood has to remain a secret from the singer. When theyre saying "Never not ever again!" the singers partner wont ever be beaten by anyone ever again. The singer just wants to let their partner know that they are no longer alone with their scars and pain.

My problem with your interpretation is that the words "brutally beaten" are very unlikely about physical abuse. It's all about feeling at home at a time, in a place, with a person/people. "Brutally beaten" more then likely is referring to the idea of being shoved around, voiceless, minor, "an orphan". It's about taking away that sense of being displaced, and instead embracing something/someone(s) in safety.

It can either be about the band finding family again & safety in each other, feeling incomplete otherwise or finding family within a typical family structure...

I could be way off here, but I think the song is about growing up. Or looking back and realizing that you are an adult now. The lines "you dont have to pretend to be an orphan anymore" just seem to make me think of how as a teenager we always have battles with our parents and try to find an identity that doesent include them. i think this song is the band or lyric writings coming to terms with who they are as an adult and realizing that they dont have to fight against something such as the ideals of their parents anymore.

i agree, its like looking back at all the issues they had as a teenager, and growing up and moving on..

I agree with SeanMurpph in most ways, I would say it's about a relationship where, in this case, the girl has a history of drug use or abuse and is still struggling with the addiction. Each time she relapses she swears it's the last time, it won't happen again. While the man is begging her to live up to her potential, her past doesn't define her and dwelling on it only "slows the momentum" of not only their progress in the relationship but her own progression forward toward a clean start.
