Virgin Lyrics
Manic depressive!
Masochistic!
You don't move don't move unless you know someone you can move
And I bruise just like anyone would bruise
And I know we've got a long way to go
I know I've got so far
We built this house with our hands, and our time, and our blood
You build this up in one day to fall downward and rust
You built this house with your hands, and your time, and your blood
We built this up in one day to fall downward and rust
I'm gone
You tried to emphasize and side with both your ghosts
In time I swore I'd take the straight and narrow path but still won't
I hold his ear I'm only trying to do my job tonight
Kiss him on top his lips and crucify the fire
We built this house with our hands, and our time, and our blood
You built this up in one day to fall downward and rust
You built this house with your hands, and your time, and your blood
We built this up in one day to fall downward and...
Never really feel the same
never gonna be the same
no it's never gonna be the same
never gonna be the same
We built this house with our hands, and our time, and our blood
We built this up in one day to fall downward and rust
We built this house with our hands, and our time, and our blood
You built this up in one day to fall downward and rust
Trust in me the same way (with your time, your blood)
Holy or inane (To fall downward and)
Never really feel the same
Never gonna be the same
No, it's never gonna be the same
Never gonna be the same
Masochistic!
You don't move don't move unless you know someone you can move

This song is out of this world!! The way Andy Hull starts his verses are always so cool, like "And I'm gone!"
Also, the kids sings is so chilling and awesome!
This song, to me, is about adultery. Likely about about Andy Hull and his wife. that's probably why he doesn't like talking about the song meanings on this album
some lines that stood out:
"And I bruise just like anyone would bruise" = I'm human and i make mistakes
Chorus = the house they built is their relationship that fell after one (or both) parties cheated.
"In time I swore I'd take the straight and narrow path but still won't I hold his ear I'm only trying to do my job tonight Kiss him on top his lips and crucify the fire" = sounds like he cheated while on tour and is trying to stay faithful but its hard, but at the same time shes cheating on him while hes gone
"Never really feel the same never gonna be the same" = this ties in with the virgin title. the relationship was pure at first, but once they cheated once, the relationship will never be what it once was.
let me know if you agree/disagree. but I'm sure I'm right lol
great song... these guys are amazing, btw
Hmmm, Bronx, that's an interesting take on it and it could be true.

I wanted to address the part about "the straight and narrow path." Hull uses very pointedly Christian terminology on this part. When Jesus was going to be arrested and brought to trial, his disciple Peter reacts by fighting a guard, cutting off his ear. In the context of this Scripture Peter is "only trying to do [his] job." Then, Hull says "kiss him on top his lips and crucify the fire." This seems to make reference to Judas' betrayal of Christ. Judas kissed Christ to signal to the guards...

Judas kissed Christ to signal to the guards which one of the men present in the garden was Jesus, which eventually led to Jesus' crucifixion.
In an interview posted at http://reviewrinserepeat.com/news/2011-05-30/artist-insight-manchester-orchestra , Hull talks about the song's meaning a bit, saying that it's about sex, marriage, and the band. The song seems to point to this idea that just one action can screw up beautiful things that took so much effort and time to build. So, in that context, it makes sense that Hull references the betrayal of Christ. Hull seems to see Christ as this beautiful story of a man who in one night is betrayed and abandoned by the ones he held closest. Hull seems to see that, in a similar way, Manchester Orchestra can betray the trust they've built with their fanbase.
In a similar way, Hull can betray the trust he's built with his wife.

Actually, Andy himself says this song refers to the fans and simple math talks about infidelity. Check this out: http://youtu.be/nDUXJM8SBUM

It's about America getting fked. Think about it. Virgin? They feed us all this stuff and force capitalism down our throats and "it's never gonna be the same".
I think he is much too smart to have such a cliche, pop-culture position like that. Capitalism beats the hell out of socialism and communism (see: history of the world in the last 300 years for reference).

To me, this is the opposite. This is the fall of America because we've let the rest of the world dictate our actions. Our leaders lie to us and try to control us. More laws, more taxes, more government, more control.

The best part is, people my age these days think that is what they're preventing when they vote for socialist liberals or RINOs (Republican In Name Only). Right now, our two biggest political parties that harbor all our leaders are virtually the same. There is little diversity. Obama and Romney's policies are the same, they just spin them a different way.
That is what this song says to me. Whether or not the author intended it...
And I love America. That doesn't mean I love my congressman or the attorney general.

Let's not turn this political. Come on guys

@metalmilitia141 I hear it as a political song as well. I could be wrong. I think it's a song about socialism. The chorus definitely is.

It's social more than political. It's about the people who built America, like the disabled soldier in the video, and their sadness and anger at watching their nation be corrupted (fall downward and rust) by the modern culture, represented by TV and Hollywood.

In an interview that you can find on their Youtube channel, Andy was asked if this song title related to their Album Im Like a Virgin Losing A Chils and he said very much so Yes.
Chris has also said in interviews that this is kind of a song to the fans. You can see that with the line "you built this house with your hands and your time and your blood"
In the interview on their Youtube Channel Andy talked about the song and said: "The song is a lyrical story, it is talking about losing your virginity, losing your band's virginity, which means like you know releasing your first album and then everybody questioning you after it and questioning what you do compared to it. Its something to our fans, and theres also some relation to a child's innocence and a child losing faith as they enter adulthood. Like with the never going to be the same line. Never going to be the same means the same thing as having sex for the first time, as it does releasing your record for the first time, as it does for a 5 year old who realizes that he would rather steal the candybar than work to get it."
Incredible song!!!
i agree. btw, i love your screen name ;p

We built this house with our hands, and our time, and our blood You build this up in one day to fall downward and rust You built this house with your hands, and your time, and your blood We built this up in one day to fall downward and rust
I would say house would be like your ego, flesh that you live in you build up your ego with your time and blood, and the lyrics are talking about coming to a collapse in your life where you fall downward meaning hit a complete breaking point spiritually and mentally, rust meaning feeling dirty mentally. Where he talks about bruising maybe the person who is coming to the collapse bruised the other persons emotions and he still wants the love that hurt him to trust him and open up, but he doesn't really understand thats hes dancing on her grave 'doing his job crucify fire' the holy or insane makes me think this person is really hitting the bottom eattin up with fear which makes sense because most people have to hit a complete breaking point before they will become born again and free themselves from there past so maybe thats why its called Virgin. Very deep, but it spoke to me as that.
I think it should be "I hold this fear I'm only trying to do my job tonight"
Anyone work out the relevance of the song title?
Love this song. The music video is amazing also.
@BronxBoi87
I highly doubt this song has any personal relation to andy himself. If you havent seen any of his interviews he says most of his song writing inspiration comes to him in dreams. And also the fact that his whole side project is a made up story of a sailor.
